Radyo Singko 92.3 News FM hailed Most Supportive Radio Station by DSWD’s Gawad Ulat

Radyo Singko 92.3 News FM was recognized as Gawad Ulat’s Most Supportive Radio Station by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) during the awarding ceremony held recently at the agency’s central office in Quezon City.

According to DSWD Secretary Dinky Soliman, Radyo Singko 92.3 News FM was unanimously voted by the awards committee as the most supportive radio station "for having provided the most and cost-free radio airtime on DSWD programs, projects and services through [its] news and public affairs programs such as Punto Asintado and Aksyon Solusyon.”

Punto Asintado anchor Aida Sy, DSWD Sec. Dinky Soliman,
DILG Sec. Jesse Robredo and Radyo Singko reporter Allan Lopez

"Punto Asintado" anchor Erwin Tulfo shared that his daily morning commentary program with Aida Sy can always work hand in hand with the government when it comes to disseminating information to the public. “Bukas ang programa natin hindi lang sa DSWD pati sa iba pa nating ahensya ng gobyerno kung patungkol po ’yan sa pagtuturo po sa mga kababayan at pagbibigay ng impormasyon o anumang tulong,” he said.

“’Yung ginawad po namin sa inyo ay hindi dahil pinupuri niyo kami, [ito ay] kundi dahil tinutulungan niyo kami dyan sa matuwid na daan,” Soliman reiterated in her interview with "Punto Asintado" on Friday.

Airing from Monday to Friday at 8am to 10am, news and commentary program "Punto Asintado" promotes change by informing the public of a given problem or issue. "Aksyon Solusyon," meanwhile, helps listeners who need immediate aid and is hosted by former Senator and four-term Philippine Red Cross Chairman Richard Gordon and Amelyn Veloso daily from 10am-11:30am.

"Gawad Ulat" is part of the "PaNata Ko sa Bayan" (Pagkilala sa Natatanging Kontribusyon sa Bayan) Awards that “acknowledges the efforts of individuals, groups or organizations whose panata or vow is to share their resources and time in providing a better opportunity for disadvantaged sectors.”

Moreover, at the 20th KBP Golden Dove Awards late last year, Radyo Singko 92.3 News FM also clinched four recognitions including a nomination in the Best FM Radio Station category.

Anchor Aida Sy and Radyo Singko reporter Allan Lopez accepted the award in behalf of the leading AM on FM station.

Henry Omaga-Diaz looks into poor state of Philippine courtrooms in "Krusada"

Broadcast journalist Henry Omaga-Diaz will advocate the repair of the country’s courtrooms with dilapidated fixtures and infrastructure this Thursday (Feb 2) in “Krusada.”

Among the grounds cited for Chief Justice Renato Corona’s impeachment is his alleged failure to account for judiciary development funds amounting to billions of pesos, part of which were spent on court rooms that were financed but not created.

Amidst the intense showdown between the prosecution and defense in the impeachment hearing, Henry will reveal in his report the wretched state of Philippine trial courts – from lawyers, parties, and witnesses cramming in very small spaces and judges sharing the same courtrooms, resulting in the unintentional delay of case proceedings.

Henry believes that courtrooms should operate in strategic and decent locations because the state of these structures reflects the quality of justice from the legal system.

“I hope something good would come out of Chief Justice Corona’s trial. I hope that this process will lead to the complete reform of the country’s judicial system that would give citizens the justice they deserve,” Henry stressed.

Listen, take part and be one with Henry’s crusade because it takes more than words to make a stand. Watch “Krusada” this Thursday (Feb 2) after “Bandila” on ABS-CBN, or earlier on DZMM TeleRadyo (SkyCable Channel 26), 9:15 PM.

Scott Speedman, the Other Man in "The Vow"

Finding huge box-office success with such blockbusters as “Underworld” and “Underworld: Evolution” where he originated the central character of the hybrid Vampire/Lycan Michael Corvinus, Scott Speedman now explores his romantic side in Columbia Pictures' endearing love story, “The Vow.” He joins an impressive ensemble led by Channing Tatum, Rachel McAdams, Jessica Lange and Sam Neill.

The Vow” is the real-life story of a young couple who were struck by tragedy shortly after their wedding. A car crash puts the wife (McAdams) in a coma, where she is cared for by her devoted husband (Tatum). When she comes to, without any memory of her husband or their marriage, the husband must woo her and ultimately win her heart once again.

Paige has reverted mentally to the young law student she was five years earlier, before she met Leo and became an artist. In seemingly an instant, she is no longer the wife Leo knew, and on top of that, she no longer recognizes her current life. Making matters worse, Paige thinks she's still engaged to charming businessman Jeremy (Speedman), who still wants her, and remains reluctant to embrace Leo, with his less conventional lifestyle making music, as anyone she might have ever loved.

As for the role of Jeremy, it was important to cast an actor who had the charisma to be a formidable foe for Leo and someone that the audience would believe Paige had loved, and may still love. Jeremy shows the other path that Paige could have taken and could choose again. Scott Speedman was cast in this role and did not disappoint.

“The great thing about Scott is that he plays a leading man,” explains director Michael Sucsy. “A lot of times with Hollywood casting, you’ve got the big movie star in one role, and then some supporting guy in the other role. Well, guess who she’s going to end up with? It telegraphs it. So the great thing about casting Scott is that it really puts into question who she’s going to end up with. He has to be a contender, and I love that about Scott and his performance.”

An added bonus was that Scott and Rachel had worked together previously and therefore evoked a natural chemistry on set. “Scott really nailed the role. We’re lucky to have had him,” adds McAdams.

Scott Speedman most recently starred in “Barney's Version” opposite Paul Giamatti and Dustin Hoffman for director Richard Lewis, “Good Neighbours” opposite Jay Baruchel for director Jacob Tierney and “Adoration” for director Atom Egoyan. Prior to that he starred opposite Liv Tyler in the box-office smash “The Strangers.”

His other film credits include Ron Shelton’s “Dark Blue,” opposite Kurt Russell; Isabel Coixet’s “My Life Without Me,” opposite Sarah Polley, for which he won Best Actor at the Bordeaux International Film Festival; Bruce Paltrow’s “Duets,” co-starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Maria Bello; and Lee Tamahori’s “xXx: State of the Union.”

In television, Speedman landed the role of Ben Covington in the popular WB Network drama “Felicity,” which had a successful four-season run.

Opening across the Philippines this February, “The Vow” is distributed by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International. Visit www.columbiapictures.com.ph to see the latest trailers, get free downloads and play free movie games.

Latest CG Visual FX Stuns in "Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance"

Though the directors’ focus for Warner Bros.' “Ghost Rider Spirit of Vengeance” was to capture as much of the action in camera as possible, it was clear from the beginning that the film would have to employ CG effects as well. After all, the title character has a flaming skull.

In the f
ilm, Johnny Blaze (Nicolas Cage) -- still struggling with his curse as the devil’s bounty hunter – is hiding out in a remote part of Eastern Europe when he is recruited by a secret sect of the church to save a young boy from the devil. At first, Johnny is reluctant to embrace the power of the Ghost Rider, but it is the only way to protect the boy – and possibly rid himself of his curse forever.

Overseeing the VFX is Visual Effects Supervisor Eric Durst, who says, like all of the departments, the new Ghost Rider film would have a very different look from its predecessor. “[Directors] Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor really wanted a new look for `Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.' It’s a darker film, so we created a look that integrated with that. The look of the character isn’t stylized at all – it is as if Ghost Rider really existed, really had a flaming head. The skull is dark and charred – just as it would be if you really had a skull that was on fire. Another touch like that is the shoulders of the jacket – they would be bubbling up from the heat inside the body.”

The primary challenge in creating the VFX, says Durst, is that the character is “interactive. The light that comes off the flames on his head – it interacts with his shoulders and anything else nearby. But interactive light is very difficult to recreate in the computer. It’s so subtle, and it interacts in different ways with different fabrics and objects. So to achieve that, we took a hood with LED lights on it that flickered on and off. That had two great benefits for us: first, the LED lights served as tracking markers in the computer, so when Nick moved his head from left to right, we could make the skull match those movements. But the LEDs also cast a light on anything that was in proximity, so it would give us the light that would occur if the flame really was on his head.”

Durst also notes that since the release of the first “Ghost Rider” film, there have been tremendous advances in CG animation. “The foundation of getting flames in CG is fluid dynamics, and so much has happened technologically in just the last five or six years,” he says. “For the original film, Sony Pictures Imageworks created their own code and worked within the software systems that existed at the time. It was very labor intensive. For the new film, with six years’ worth of development of the technology in the field, we had a big head start. You can make things look stunningly real now.”

The effects were completed by Iloura, an Australian company. “We canvassed the world to see who had the best fire,” says Durst. “Their first test had everything – the right, dark look for the skull, the flames, the right vibe. Everyone fell in love with it right there, and Iloura did a great job on the movie.”

Opening across the Philippines on Friday, Feb. 17, “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance” is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Joya and Jessica named latest evictees of "Pinoy Big Brother Unlimited"

Pinoy Big Brother Unlimited” saw an unexpectedly gripping weekend as Joya was evicted for garnering the lowest percentage of votes in last Saturday’s (Jan 28) eviction night, while Jessica left the PBB house Sunday night (Jan 29) via forced eviction.

Joya was named as the first evictee from the season’s top 14 housemates for receiving the lowest percentage of votes (7.03%) against fellow nominees Divine (64.47%), Wendy (16.01%), and Carlo (12.50%).

Jessica, meanwhile, became the fourth housemate to be forcibly evicted for expressing her intention to quit the competition. Even if she still wanted to stay in the house, she was admittedly miserable the previous week and said she could no longer bear Big Brother’s tasks.

Jessica exited the PBB house after she accomplished three tasks – using spray paint to cross out her photo on the dining chair, and the words “I QUIT” on the mirror near the comfort room. She also put spray paint on the photo of Wendy, who Jessica thought does not have the qualities to qualify in the Big Four or become the Big Winner.

In the latest eviction night, Big Brother reprimanded the housemates for their failure to succeed in the ‘Ratahuli’ Kontra Battle, which compelled them to capture the rats lurking in the house resort.

Big Brother further expressed his dismay over the housemates’ lack of enthusiasm in accomplishing the task and went as far as saying that this might be the reality show’s only edition to not mount a Big Night and declare a Big Winner.

After Joy and Jessica’s eviction, will the 12 remaining housemates finally step up their game and prove that they deserve to be in the top 14? Don’t miss this week’s episodes as Big Brother puts out another big twist, “The Big Road Trip.”

Don’t miss the exciting developments in “Pinoy Big Brother UnliDay” with Bianca Gonzalez weekdays after “Angelito: Batang Ama” in Kapamilya Gold and in “Pinoy Big Brother UnliNight” with Toni Gonzaga weeknights after “Walang Hanggan” in Primetime Bida.
