RACHELLE ANN GO, lilipat na rin sa GMA-7? ASAP XV to Party Pilipinas?

She wasn't home so I talked to her Mom instead. Sana wag mangyari to kay Rachelle Ann.

Tinawagan ko si Rachelle Ann after ko kausapin ang Mom niya, pero nanunuod pa siya ng movie, kaya she'll get back to me na lang daw later. I'll update once na magkausap ulit kami.

GMA-7's Party Pilipinas off to rousing start

Palm Sunday turned out to be one festive happening for GMA-7 and the rest of the mainstays of its newest noontime musical-variety show Party Pilipinas.

Leaving memories of the defunct SOP behind, Party Pilipinas signifies rebirth especially to the program's main hosts Regine Velasquez, Ogie Alcasid, Jaya, and Janno Gibbs along with old regulars Kyla, Jay-R, Jolina Magdangal, Gian Magdangal, Dennis Trillo, Marvin Agustin, and La Diva, to name only a few.

The network's battalion of stars kicked off the afternoon party through a medley of upbeat numbers, which best represent the kind of party vibe the show aims to achieve this time around.

Rhian Ramos, Ehra Madrigal, Bianca King, Lovi Poe, Sunshine Dizon, Jennylyn Mercado, Aljur Abrenica, Mark Herras, Kris Bernal, Katrina Halili, Iza Calzado, Glaiza de Castro, Geoff Eigenmann, Ynna Asistio, Mark Anthony Fernandez, TJ Trinidad, Carla Abellana, Heart Evangelista, Richard Gutierrez, Dingdong Dantes, Marian Rivera, and Claudine Barretto led the other Kapuso stars on the wide stage-turned-dance floor.

Regular performers also include Kris Lawrence, Miguel Escueta, Geoff Taylor, Joshua Desiderio, Julie Ann San Jose, and Frencheska Farr.

Party Pilipinas will also have regular party jocks composed of Raymond Gutierrez, Tim Yap, Maria Dolonius, and Bella Padilla

Regine was particularly excited with the show's "high-production value." Marvin, on the other hand, loved the program's "fresh look" along with the fact that everyone was excited again to work after a few weeks of vacating the Sunday noontime slot.

"Personally hindi ko masyadong nararamdaman 'yong pressure," added Regine. "Basta ang alam ko lang mag-e-enjoy ako... Sobrang excited ako. More than just being pressured, I'm excited to do the show."

YOUNG STARS DOMINATE. StarStruck V's Steven Silva, Sarah Labahti, Enzo Pineda, Diva Montelaba, and Rocco Nacino proved that they are all certified crowd drawers based on audience reaction every time they came up on stage.

Adding more glitter and star power to the affair were popular Korean boyband U-Kiss (Ubiquitous Korean International Idol Star) and Hollywood choreographer Fusion. Though considered as a new group, U-Kiss already has a big following here in the country. It was evident that some of those in the audience left Studio 7 of the GMA Network Studios in Quezon City after the group's performance.

"He's really good and it was intimidating at first," Steven told PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) about Fusion, who choreographed the young stars in their production numbers. "But it was cool because he speaks straight English so it was easy for me to understand his instructions and he's also from the Bay Area (California, U.S.A.) so I can relate to him in a way."

The number featuring fast-rising young stars Joshua Dionisio, Barbie Forteza, Jhake Vargas, and Bea Binene was also an instant hit. Trust Barbie and Joshua to make everyone in the audience swoon with kilig excitement reminiscent of their roles in the series, First Time.

Dancing hunks Mark Herras, Aljur Abrenica, and Rocco Nacino together with new talent Yassi engaged in a dance showdown. The sexy all-female group Eurasia performed the theme song of the upcoming modern sequel of the classic '80s film, Working Girls with stars Iza Calzado and Bianca King.

Elmo Magalona, the son of the late Francis M., was a revelation bringing the house down with his rap number.

Other exciting groups who will perform regularly in Party Pilipinas are Pop Girls, XLR8, LSGH Airforce, Claret Hataw, Ateneo Indak, LSDC Street, The Company of Ateneo Dancers, UP Dance Street Club, and GMA-7's own dance group, MXMVNT.

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS. Party Pilipinas also brought together twins Richard and Raymond Gutierrez. Richard showed a different side of him by doing a dance number.

The much-anticipated dance showdown between the Kapuso network's two male lead stars, Richard and Dingdong, didn't happen though as expected.

New acquisition singer-actor Mark Bautista also made his debut as a Kapuso and one of the show's regulars. Mark used to be part of rival program, ASAP XV before deciding to jump ship.

"Masaya ako na napasama ako sa show. Kasi unang-una bago 'tong show," said Mark to the entertainment press after the program. "Before pa naman din ako lumipat, kilala ko na 'yong ibang artists dito. Grabe naman 'yong pag-welcome nila sa akin kaya siguro naging madali din sa akin na maka-connect din sa halos lahat. Warm silang lahat sa akin."

Party Pilipinas will reportedly venture outside its home studio and visit places outside Metro Manila in the coming days to further promote the new program.

Tomorrow, March 30, the whole gang of Party Pilipinas will troop to the Araneta Coliseum to tape their second episode which will be aired next Sunday, April 4.

‘La Diva’ Releases Self-Titled Debut Album

The kapuso female trio launched their self-titled debut album.

They started singing together for a segment of GMA-7’s now defunct Sunday musical variety show SOP but their powerful voices and unique blend eventually gave rise to an all-girl singing group called La Diva.

Viewers tuned in to their TV sets every week to see what song they would perform next. La Diva created such a wide following that people clamored for more. They were so much buzzed about that Boxing champ Manny Pacquiao personally chose them to sing the Philippine National Anthem before his fight with Miguel Cotto. La Diva ended up as another national pride with their proper and beautiful rendition of the song.

The three singers of La Diva have one common denominator—GMA-7’s singing tilt Pinoy Pop Superstar. Both Jonalyn Viray and Maricris Garcia emerged as champions of the first and third seasons, respectively; Aicelle Santos was the second season’s runner-up. Though all achievers and great solo singers in their own right, these girls set it all aside to blend well together and create beautiful music. With Jonalyn in command of the high notes, Aicelle in the mid-range and Maricris on the base, they create wonderful melodies together.

Fans of La Diva will now be be able to appreciate their idols’ vocal prowess through the group’s self-titled debut album. It features the carrier single, “Angels Brought Me Here” (a Guy Sebastian original) which is also the theme of GMA Korean TV series Queen Seon Duk.

The album also includes their versions of One Republic ’s “Apologize,” “I’m Yours” by Jason Mraz, Basil Valdez’s “Gaano Kadalas Ang Minsan,” “Best of My Love” by The Emotions and Destiny’s Child’s “Stand Up For Love.” Also noteworthy are originals composed by Danny Tan like “Kasiping Ka,” “One Last Goodbye” and “Rosalinda,” which was used in the Filipino adaptation of the Mexican telenovela of the same title.

La Diva is now out in CDs under Sony Music and GMA Records. Jonalyn, Aicelle and Maricris will perform at SM Clark on March 28 to promote their self-titled album.

First Time stars join Party Pilipinas

First Time stars Joshua Dionisio, Jake Vargas, Bea Binene and Barbie Forteza, join the much-anticipated premiere of GMA-7's Sunday musical variety program, Party Pilipinas.

Beginning March 28, join the First Time stars as they pump up Sunday afternoons with the latest dance craze and perform the most recent song hits to Pinoys everywhere.

In the top-rating program First Time, the characters played by Barbie, Joshua, Jake and Bea tackle the hot issues that most teenagers face today in and out of school. Although they may be today's hottest teen celebrities, these four Kapuso talents are just like typical Pinoy barkadas united by common interests. In Party Pilipinas, they showcase their love for dancing and music.

The stars of First Time, who have been good friends since last year, shared that they enjoy performing the latest dance hits, especially hiphop. According to Joshua, he started dancing when he was 11 years old and Jake began busting moves when he joined showbiz a few years ago. Both Barbie and Bea say they love dancing hiphop; they're even willing to attend workshops to master the latest dance steps.

When it comes to music the choices of these young stars vary. For Barbie and Bea, listening to the songs of pop stars Miley Cyrus, Avril Lavigne and even Taylor Swift completes their day. The boys of First Time, on the other hand, prefer listening to love songs and rock music. Both Jake and Joshua, play musical instruments like guitar and piano. To add more fun to the revelry, the boys revealed they are willing to sing and perform acoustic numbers in Party Pilipinas!.

Party with Barbie, Bea, Jake and Joshua, every Sunday beginning March 28 on the newest Sunday musical show, GMA-7's Party Pilipinas!

GMA Network refutes ABS-CBN on ratings

GMA NETWORK, Inc. said it remains the leader in Mega Manila television ratings, citing data from a different research outfit.

Refuting rival ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp.'s claim of having wrested the No. 1 spot, GMA Network cited AGB Nielsen's findings that showed GMA Network having an audience share of 39.1% in Mega Manila last month.

“In February, GMA posted an average weekday audience share of 39.1%, up by 1.4 points versus ABS-CBN’s 37.7%. Moreover, partial March data (available until March 14; with March 7 to 14 based on overnight ratings) showed GMA ahead overall with an average audience share of 36.2%, up by 0.4 against ABS’ 35.8%,” the statement read. -- Emilia Narni J. Carmen Soo says there had been ‘changes’ with her supposed movie with Piolo Pascual

Malaysian actress Carmen Soo is in the country for some endorsements and other commitments. She also shared that there is no word yet as to when the movie that she is supposed to be part of will start shooting. “I think it changed. I think there are some delays. But not yet for now,” she said about the movie, which allegedly, will also star Piolo Pascual.

Speaking of Piolo, Carmen is delighted to hear that the actor’s former leading lady and rumored girlfriend, KC Concepcion, is excited to meet the Malaysian actress. In a previous interview, KC said that she would like to meet Carmen in person and become friends with her. In response, Carmen said that she would also want the same thing. “I’ve never met her before. But she’s very beautiful,” Carmen revealed. “I’ve met her dad Gabby in Kuala Lumpur for the ABS-CBN Kapamilya fiesta.” Carmen said that she could tell from TV interviews that KC is pleasant and amicable. “I wanna be friends with her too. She is so beautiful in her interviews, she’s very approachable and friendly, sweet and no air, it would be nice to meet her someday and get to know her.”

She also excitedly shared that she was a guest performer in Christian Bautista’s concert in the Music Museum last March 13, where she did a duet with Christian and a solo number. “It was my first concert. I did (sing). It was really good. Christian was very supportive and everyone gave me tips during the rehearsals, so it’s really good and really fun. I wanna do it some more.” The actress said that she has no plans yet of building a singing career, though she does not mind singing in concerts or in a production number. “If there’s more I’ll just keep trying. It’s something that you need to keep practicing on so I don’t know how far I could go so yeah, it’s fun up to now.”

All-new I-Witness begins on March 11

Witness, the county’s most awarded documentary program, pioneers a new breed of documentary beginning this March 11 on GMA Pinoy TV. In keeping with its tag, “Ang bawat dokumentaryo ay isang pagtuklas,” this month’s I-Witness features epic discoveries “stories that are bold, intriguing and surprising.

Sandra Aguinaldo investigates a shocking record that is perhaps unknown to many Filipinos. Testimonies from WWII suggest that the largest feeding frenzy of sharks in recorded history happened right here in the Philippine Sea. Somewhere in the vicinity of Leyte Gulf, hundreds of American soldiers were left wounded in the water after their ship, the USS Indianapolis, was torpedoed down. Sandra Aguinaldo interviews a survivor who shares the horror of watching his comrades being eaten alive by what he insists are vicious sharks. Sandra visits the site of the infamous incident and attempts to solve the puzzle. Is the Philippine Sea really the most notorious of all? Or is there another truth that lurks beneath history’s uncharted waters?

Jay Taruc is known for documentaries in which he throws himself into the world of different people from all walks of life. This March, he immerses in the correctional system to experience and document the lives of prison inmates. Completely locked up and without the usual comforts of his everyday life, Jay experiences what it’s like to live in a prison cell and perform an inmate’s duties. He learns the ins and outs of the penitentiary, studies the culture of survival of the fittest, and brings home the untold stories of some of the most forgotten members of society.

Kara David journeys to a secret location where a group of men have dug a massive hole into the ground in search of buried treasure. Dozens of gold bars, believed hidden by Japanese generals, are the main target. A map and a set of codes lead Kara and the team to the supposed site of buried gold. But perhaps most telling is a living witness’ account of how the treasure was hidden. He claims he was tasked by Japanese officials to carry unidentified yet highly valuable packages to a hidden site, which he reveals to the I-Witness team. Kara David explores the never-ending hunt for hidden riches.

Howie Severino was a photojournalist even before he began making documentaries. At the height of violent dispersals at student rallies during Martial Law, Howie took a photograph of a young woman being taken by the police. The photo resulted in Howie’s imprisonment and trial. He was eventually released, but he never knew the fate of the woman in the picture. Decades later, Howie searches for the woman whose life and photograph so significantly shaped his own story. He also dissects the back and front stories of compelling photographs, proving that a picture indeed paints a thousand words.

I-Witness also showcases a new, cutting-edge look “from the opening billboard shot using the latest in video technology to the episodes featuring breakthrough treatments to the documentary.

The all-new I-Witness begins on March 11 on GMA Pinoy TV at these times:

SINGAPORE/HK, 5:20AM

Michael V topbills cautionary comedy

FOR THE FIRST time, Michael V stars in a weekly GMA-7 sitcom that he himself conceptualized: “Pepito Manaloto.” Under the direction of Bert de Leon, the sitcom essays the almost true-to-life story of protagonist, Pepito, a simple man who dreams of providing a comfortable life for his wife, Elsa (Manilyn Reynes), and their only son, Jonjon (Joshua Pineda).

Pepito regularly bets in the national lottery and, one morning, finds himself the lone winner of P700 million! Into his new life as a multimillionaire enters Maricar (Carmina Villarroel), who, along with financial analyst, Tommy Diones (Ronnie Henares), offers to manage his fortune. The sitcom follows how Pepito handles the sudden reversal of fortune.

Reminder

Michael V asserts that the concept of the show, which premieres on March 20, is not to entice people to gamble, but to impart a reminder that, when someone is given an opportunity to improve his life, he has to make the most of it.

We hear stories of poverty-stricken people winning a lot of money, then losing all of it and becoming poor again. It’ll be interesting to see if Pepito suffers the same fate. There will be many situations for viewers to learn from – and a lot of laughter, as well.

Luis Manzano and Angel Locsin are trying to start all over again

During the commemoration of Master Rapper Francis Magalona's first death anniversary, Showbiz News Ngayon spotted former sweethearts Angel Locsin and Luis Manzano arriving at the said event side-by-side. From the glow on their faces, one could read that they were basically happy with each other’s company; thus, raising yet another suspicion that the two had finally gone back together after practically spending several months apart.

Upon being confronted with the said thought, Angel and Luis simply laughed. In chorus, they blurted that they are definitely not back together as a couple just like what others might be thinking. They simply explained that they are just enjoying the time they are spending as good friends with a rather fruitful past. Probably, Luis assumed, people were just caught in surprise to see them together in public once again since they decided to part ways.

In addition to the said issue, Luis and Angel claimed that they would rather stay that way for now while meticulously ironing certain details in their past, so that if ever they decide to go back on their previous path, both of them will be certain that all is forgotten in line with their fresh start. As Luis himself put it into words, "We're really fine today. Happy, happy naman. Really happy today...Masaya kaming magkasama ng ganito lang sa ngayon, pero ako trying to work to sort things out pa din."

Paolo Contis and Vince de Jesus will Host ‘Wipeout’ on GMA

The hit American game show “Wipeout” will now be shown in the Philippines via GMA.

The hit American game show “Wipeout” is now set to take Philippines by storm. To be hosted by actor-host Paolo Contis and stage actor-composer Vince de Jesus, the newest game show will air on March 15 before Family Feud.

Named as the “world’s largest extreme obstacle course,” the Kapuso channel’s new show will provide contestants with unexpected crashes, smashes, and stumbles for the $50,000 grand prize.

Starstruck V alum Nina Kodaka meanwhile will interview audiences on their predictions of the 24 challengers.

The 24 brave and daring contestants will then go head-to-head through the stressful physical challenges of the Wipeout Zone.

Though the show is syndicated from the US, Vince said they will still make their comments in the Filipino language.

“We will have our own spills and we will also follow some hilarious parts in the episode aired in the US,” he said.

“Kami ni Paolo, mas physical, mas ma-showy, mas maraming gestures,” Vince said.

He also guarantees a wackier and super exciting afternoon viewing for all as soon as “Wipeout” airs its first episode.

Though no plans yet for GMA to do the localize version of “Wipeout” so Filipino audience can experience all the interesting stunts and obstacles, Vince said: “We can truly reign the Wipeout Zone.”

Michael V. & Carmina Villaroel to Star in First Reality Sitcom ‘Pepito Manaloto’

GMA-7 aims to introduce a new trend in Philippine TV viewing with the premiere of Pepito Manaloto, its first reality sitcom that will air its pilot episode on March 20.

The first-ever reality-sitcom is an original concept of one of GMA-7’s prime comedians, creative director and Asian TV Awards three-time best comedy actor recipient Michael V, who will portray the amusing character of Pepito Manaloto.

Joining Michael V in this unique program are Carmina Villaroel, Manilyn Reynes, Ronnie Henares, John Fier and Joshua Pineda, with the special participation of veteran actor Freddie Webb.

Under the direction of Bert de Leon, this side-splitting reality-sitcom tells the story of Pepito Manaloto (Michael V), an poor man who simply dreams of providing a comfortable life for his wife Elsa (Manilyn Reynes) and only son Jonjon (Joshua Pineda). He is a cool and a trustworthy friend for his best friend Patrick (John Fier).

Just like everyone, Pepito dreams of becoming rich and famous. He dreams of winning the lottery and become an instant multimillionaire someday. So he religiously bets in the national lottery, hoping his dream would come true.

Little did Pepito know that his simple and underprivileged life significantly changes when he becomes the lone winner of P700 million in the national lottery!

The new multimillionaire then meets Maricar (Carmina Villaroel), an alluring and sophisticated woman who volunteers to manage Pepito’s new found wealth. Pepito’s new assistant will also introduce him to the glamorous world of the rich and famous. But who is Maricar? Can Pepito really trust this beautiful stranger? Eat, Bulaga! silver special on DVD

Eat, Bulaga! is now 30 years old and it marked its three decades by giving back to the public through its EB Scholars project that now helps send to school poor, but deserving students and the EB Heroes search that honored contributions to society by the so-called little people.

When the noontime show reached its 25th year, however, the program put up a grand production that has yet to be matched in terms of magnitude and quality five years later on local television.

Billed as Eat Bulaga Silver Special, I failed to catch its airing toward the last week of November 2004 because the first of its two parts was aired on a Saturday, which is preparation time for Startalk.

The good news is that the special had already been compiled into a DVD (it wasn’t that easy to put together) and those who missed it may watch it soon. I had the pleasure of finally sitting down to view it and it is very impressive. Here is my review of the Eat Bulaga Silver Special.

It was the greatest show on earth — at least, on this side of the world.

Held at the expansive Clark Centennial Expo in Angeles City, Pampanga province on Nov. 18, 2004, the Eat Bulaga Silver Special was the result of a whole year’s planning and conceptualization, three months of preparation and several weeks of rehearsals involving the biggest cast (by the thousands) ever assembled on Philippine television.

The show’s opening segment alone could rival some of the best production numbers of the annual Academy Awards in Hollywood. It began with 2,000 costumed school children from different public educational institutions singing in unison the Eat, Bulaga! theme song — segueing to Tito, Vic & Joey aboard a mock space capsule that brought them on a time travel back to 1979 — the year the show was launched.

Then came a flashback of the various events that coincided with the birth of the program: From global news like Margaret Thatcher’s installation as Britain’s first woman Prime Minister and Saddam Hussein getting elected as Iraqi president, sports triumphs like Bong Coo’s being a bowling world champion, trends in music (John Travolta and Donna Summer’s disco hits) to trivialities — Melanie Marquez getting crowned Miss International.

After that rundown of recent history, the space capsule flew across the audience area, landed on stage and out popped Tito, Vic & Joey who were visibly overwhelmed by the size of the crowd (estimated at more than 60,000) who showed up at the Clark Expo that day to celebrate with them Eat, Bulaga!’s 25th year on television.

The succeeding segments proved to be an emotional walk down memory lane as the show paid tribute to the men and women who lent face to this noontime treat through those 25 years: From Tito, Vic & Joey to all the former co-hosts who contributed their time and talent to the program and even those were not necessarily regular emcees then, but helped out pinch-hit for other Eat, Bulaga! family members, among them, Helen Gamboa and Lani Mercado.

Most touching was the in memoriam portion in honor of two ladies who had moved on to a more fun place than the stage of Eat, Bulaga!: Rio Diaz, an official Eat, Bulaga! host for half a decade, and Helen Vela, who was the eternal pinch-hitter for a period almost close to 10 years.

Helen’s stint with Eat, Bulaga! began when she cheered on as part of the audience that day good friend Coney Reyes was launched as the new female co-host in May 1982. Also once part of Student Canteen, where she quit her former show under not very pleasant circumstances, she was later given an Eat, Bulaga! satellite program, the Kilometrico Quiz, that she co-hosted with Tito Sotto. But Helen always made herself available to take over hosting chores from any Eat, Bulaga! member who was ill, abroad or tied up with other showbiz commitments.

With Aiza Seguerra and Pops Fernandez singing The Warrior is a Child, the tribute to Rio and Helen turned out to be more emotional than lachrymal. The concept and execution hit the right formula because the segment, which could have been morbid, blended harmoniously with the rest of the show that overflowed with so much joy and energy comparable to excitement everyone displayed when we welcomed the new millennium.

The other showstoppers were mostly the numbers that traced all the dance hits that became part of the daily contests in Eat, Bulaga! in the past: The Village People’s Macho Man, Lambada, Thriller and other dance crazes that were made popular to the viewing public via this noontime program.

Later in the special, Jopay Paguia and the Sexbomb Dancers whipped up a storm of a performance when they were joined — via VTR — by the now-New York-based Gracia in a terpsichorean showdown that went back to the days when the dance hit was Manila Girl and went all the way to the then still sizzling hot Spaghetti.

An interesting trivia was the Arnold Clavio segment (with puppet Arn-Arn), wherein the award-winning broadcaster revealed that in 1983, he joined along with his gang an Eat, Bulaga! competition where he was a drummer in their Beatles-inspired entry. They lost in that one. Undeterred by their defeat, Arnold returned to audition for the Footloose dance contest, but was booted out as early as the audition round.

The special actually tried to feature everyone who had been part of the program up to that time either via clips or numbers and in the process we were reminded of the celebrities who once graced the show — from major local celebrities like Sharon Cuneta and Maricel Soriano to big foreign artists the likes of John Denver, Brian McKnight, Michael Bublé and the Menudo.

And then there was a throwback to the different periods when Eat, Bulaga! became the launching pad for some of today’s young talents who joined the show’s various contests — from Little Miss Philippines to Mr. Pogi that gave us Jericho Rosales.

Eat Bulaga Silver Special also showed another facet of Tito, Vic & Joey not generally known to the public — as composers and lyricists of Original Pilipino Music (Balat-kayo, Swing, Ipagpatawad Mo, etc.).

The biggest tribute, however, was given to the King of Comedy, Dolphy, who joined Tito, Vic & Joey in a medley of foreign classics that led to the comic geniuses doing on-air banter.

At the finale, the special ended literally with a bang as a series of fireworks enveloped the skies above the venue site. It was one moment that could choke with tears and emotions even those watching at home — as cast, crew and those in the live audience celebrated that important occasion that marked this favorite noontime fare’s turning silver.

Eat Bulaga Silver Special was voted Best Entertainment Special at the 10th Asian TV Awards the year after it was shown on television.
