‘Langit sa Piling Mo,’ another GMA-7 original

Today (Monday), May 31, marks the much-awaited maiden flight of “Langit sa Piling Mo,” GMA-7’s latest primetime drama which is also another original series. Set against the fascinating and exciting travel industry as backdrop, “Langit sa Piling Mo” stars a fresh tandem, that of Heart Evangelista (who arrived at Studio 5 where the grand press launch was held with her pet, a two-year old German Shepherd) and “StarStruck’s” first Ultimate Male Survivor, Mark Herras, two individuals whose lives are intertwined by a common dream – to fly!

Studio 5 was set up to simulate a domestic flight preparing for take-off complete with flight instructions and the usual announcements. Heart as Marj plays the role of a flight stewardess and, and Mark as Rigo is the son of the owner of Eagle Airways, the airline company she works for.

Since it’s the first time that they’re working together as a love team, Mark said he felt apprehension on their first taping day. “Kinabahan talaga ako. But then things went well, and I’m happy to be working with her.” Heart expressed the same feelings.

No Party Yet...

I watched in anticipation last Sunday’s Party Pilipinas after someone told me that changes were about to happen as the show is now being alternately directed by Mark Reyes and Rico Gutierrez.

I am not sure who directed last Sunday’s show at the studio (it is now back after touring the Philippines). The opening number was staged on the road between the old compound and the new building with a couple of cars, which later would be the props for the “Carwash” number with Rochelle Pangilinan. Nice try there, but still lacked the glitter that makes Asap visually more pleasant to watch. Where were Mark Bautista, the network’s power couples Regine Velasquez and Ogie Alcasid, and Dingdong Dantes and Marian Rivera? Oh, they were on a US tour, that was why.

I still can’t understand what those guys, headed by self-proclaimed “eventologist” Tim Yap, were doing there, struggling very hard to make an impression on the audience with their synthetic American slang. (Is GMA-7 no longer targeting the household audiences in the C, D, E economic segments? Because if they have changed its target market they should as well changed the people in the show, because they are incongruous to that marketing strategy!)

The director introduced graphics that are kind of dated in execution (guys were we doing a retro show? Please explain!) that didn’t flow in smoothly before each number. Worse, the show didn’t have the star power that could compel someone like me who has seen variety shows come and go watch it without having a smirk on my mouth each time someone not familiar to my eyes would appear onstage.

Meanwhile, Asap XV didn’t have to try too hard. It had more than a thousand stars (it’s Star Magic’s 18th anniversary celebration) and, oh la la la, the numbers were all properly staged (well rehearsed to be specific). Never mind, if most of the stars are unfamiliar as well. But they did do well and that’s good enough a reason for people to hang around.

Party Pilipinas : The Big Change!

Nagbibigay ng update si Direk Rico Gutierrez sa kanyang Twitter account sa mangyayari sa Party Pilipinas kapag sila na ni Direk Mark Reyes ang hahawak. Sa May 30, si Direk Mark na ang direktor ng Sunday musical show ng GMA 7 at sa June 6 naman siya siya uupong direktor.

Nabanggit din ni Direk Rico na dalawang stage ang gagamitin ng Party Pilipinas at isa rito ang ginamit na stage sa One Earth, One Journey, ang environmental concert hosted by Richard Gutierrez. May origami ramp daw para mas malapit sa audience ang performers.

Party Pilipinas na rin lang ang usapan, sana magawan ng paraan nina Direk Rico at Direk Mark na bawasan ang paulit-ulit na pasasalamat at pagbanggit sa mga sponsors ng artists ’pag nagbi-birthday, may concert, o may bagong show dahil nakakairita at pare-parehong pangalan lang naman ang mga binabanggit.

What's Wrong with Party Pilipinas?

GMA surprised a lot of people when it announced that starting today, Party Pilipinas would now start at 12:30 pm.

Let me theorize why this had to happen:

1. Two of PP's standouts -- Ogie Alcasid and Regine Velasquez -- are out of the country for a series of shows with Marian Rivera and Dingdong Dantes. This leaves the show in the hands of Janno Gibbs, Jaya, Mark Bautista and Rachelle Anne Go.

Much of PP's performers are the young stars of GMA na hindi kasing-init kumpara sa mga young stars ng ABS, lalo na sa ASAP.

2. PP, as well as other GMA shows, is airing less commercials. This is a sign that all is not well with the network right now. Dati-rati, nag-o-overtime ang SOP and Showbiz Central dahil sa dami ng ads, pero ngayon, hindi na. Kaya umiski na ang show.

3. GMA plans to put up a new Sunday show at 11 am. Kapuso Movie Festival is only a filler, like what GMA did before Diz Iz It aired. I have a feeling that it will be a talk show like TV5's Face to Face na may Sunday edition na rin.

4. I talked to an employee of the Ynares Center and she told me na hindi siya nagandahan ang PP when the show was taped there recently. Mas gusto pa niya ang ASAP.

Elmo Magalona: On the verge

It doesn’t take a crystal ball to figure out the future of fast-rising teen star Elmo Magalona. Performing onstage is almost a birthright for the 16-year-old son of the late master rapper Francis Magalona, who first broke onto the scene with a now-iconic performance of Higante, exuding a quiet confidence while sharing the stage with rock royalty Ely Buendia.

Now out of high school, Elmo is gearing up to take a computer-based course for college, but that’s not before he leaves his mark on the hearts of teenage girls everywhere. With a plethora of Tumblr posts in his honor and thousands of followers on Twitter begging for a re-tweet, Elmo is filling the void of the “tween” market longing for a local idol.

Have we found the local counterpart to Justin Bieber? It may be too early to tell but Elmo is definitely making a good start. With his weekly performances on musical variety show Party Pilipinas always considered a highlight, those waiting to see more of him will soon be satisfied as he tries his hand at acting. With his primetime debut only a few weeks away, Elmo grants The Dialogue his first official photo shoot. And at the rate things are going, we predict this is only the first of many more in the future.

Who are you closest to in your family?

I’m close to everyone in the family at different levels.

What’s a day in your home like?

The usual, we wake up really early to start the day right, whether there’s school or not. I often just use the computer and check out new stuff online.

You seem like a natural performer. Did you always see yourself doing what you are doing now?

Yes, it’s not like I haven’t done this before. I made commercials back then, and did some plays as well. But I didn’t see myself performing by singing and dancing.

How do you prepare for a performance and what goes through your mind while onstage?

I stay focused. I also try to stay relaxed and hope to do my best. Whenever I perform live I just enjoy what I’m doing.

What song do you sing in the shower?

Right now, it’s Airplanes by B.O.B.

What weird habit or mannerism do you have?

Licking my lips every five to 10 seconds! (Laughs) And I like cracking my knuckles.

When was the last time you laughed like crazy?

I laugh like crazy all the time! I laugh really hard when I’m with my siblings because we like fooling around to the point that we all start tearing up.

Now that you’re outta there, what is the greatest lesson high school life taught you?

I learned that cramming will not get me anywhere. But at the same time I learned that the feeling of procrastination actually makes me work better.


Give us a rundown of what you do when you’re not busy with your showbiz commitments.

When I’m free I hang out with my friends and family. I also like playing video games and play basketball.

Who are you a fan of?

Of course I’m a fan of my father’s. I also like Jay-Z, Common and Nas and I idolize Lebron James.

What type of girl could win your heart?

I like girls who have nice eyes and a pretty smile. And those who like to have fun and have a good sense of humor. Looks don’t really matter because I like girls for their personality.


What dish paves the way to your heart?

I love to eat! My favorite dishes include, for Filipino, adobo; for Japanese, tempura and California maki; and for Italian, pasta and pizza.

What is the sweetest thing you’ve done for a girl?

When I personally greet my followers on Twitter, they say it’s really sweet.

What is one thing that people would be surprised to know about you?

Some don’t know that I’m really shy and quiet because I don’t seem like that whenever I’m onstage.

Who is the most overrated person in the industry?

There are a lot, really, locally and internationally. It’s a mystery to me why they’re there.

What comes to mind when you look at yourself in the mirror?

I sometimes see Papa in me, and I’m thankful that I am blessed with his talents. I also do that to remember him when I perform.

Who is your local celebrity crush?

I like Rhian Ramos. She’s pretty, she’s nice and an all-around-performer. She can sing, dance, act and even host very well.

Who do you follow on Twitter?

I’m following 23 people as of now. My family, my friends, Ubertwitter, and some tech-savvy tweeters.

What website do you visit often?

My browser’s always on because I always have a lot of tabs. (Laughs) I like checking updates on gadgets so I go to engadget.com for that, and crackberry.com for the BlackBerry. Of course I do Facebook, but not much.

Who would you like to collaborate with?

I would’ve loved to record a song with my father. And a collab with Kanye West or Drake would be awesome!

What’s the best advice you got from your dad?

To find something I want to do as my job. To love my friends, my family and my country, and to be considerate of others.

If you ruled the world what’s the first thing you’d do?

Blast the whole world with free Wi-Fi access!

Rachelle Ann nag-iinarte na sa GMA 7?

Kung hindi pa naging isang Kapuso, hindi pa makakaranas ng intriga si Rachelle Ann Go. Ilang taon din siyang naging Kapamilya pero,  tahimik lang ang buhay niya roon. Pero ngayon, biglang-bigla, nasa limelight siya. Hindi bale kung positibo ang mga balitang lumalabas sa kanya ang kaso, negatibo na nagbibigay ng hindi magandang imahe sa kanya.

‘Yung pagsasalita niya tungkol sa naging relasyon nila ng anak ni Gary Valenciano na si Gabriel o Gab ay nag-iwan ng hindi magandang lasa sa bibig ng marami. May reklamo pala siya, bakit ngayon lamang siya nagsalita at bakit isinapubliko pa niya? Puwedeng nagsumbong siya sa mga magulang nito kung ang pakikipag-usap kay Gab ay naging imposible na. She could have engaged the help of her family. Mas mabuti na pami-pamilya ang makaalam kesa ang publiko dahil isang bagay ‘yun na talagang nakasisirang puri.

Biglang-bigla rin, sinasabing nagpi-prima donna na siya sa Kapuso network. Nag-iinarte at nag*pa*paistar at nasasangkot na pati ang mga datihang Kapuso. Nakikipag-kumpetisyon ba siya sa mga dinatnan niya sa Party Pilipinas? Dapat hindi, dapat nga siya ang mag-adjust dahil siya ang baguhan. Pero ang nangyayari raw ay sila pa ang nakikibagay sa kanya. Bakit? Umabot na ba ang ere sa kanyang ulo at naghahanap siya ng sarili niyang pedestal sa bago niyang bahay?

It seems na pinatataas ng Kapuso ang popularidad ni Rachelle Ann pero, sana not at the expense of others like Gab Valenciano or the La Diva. Magaling naman siya pero tulad ni Mark (Bautista) dumating sila ng GMA 7 na meron nang naghahari’t reyna kaya makuntento na silang maghintay ng panahon na sila naman ang umangat.

Direk Rico, ‘bumusina’ kay Direk Louie

NAKAUSAP namin si Direk Rico Gutierrez sa taping ng reality dating show ng GMA Network na Take Me Out kahapon at may ilang bagay siyang nilinaw tungkol sa mga isyung kinasasangkutan niya ngayon.

Una, matagal daw niyang pinag-isipan kung tatanggapin o hindi ang iniwang programa, Party Pilipinas, ni Louie Ignacio.

Ayon kay Direk Rico, marami siyang factors na kinonsider, lalo pa nga’t siya rin ang direktor ng Showbiz Central, na umeere rin tuwing Linggo ng hapon.

Habang nag-iisip, tinawagan daw niya si Direk Louie para i-assure ito na hindi niya inagaw ang Party Pilipinas, kung saan magsisimula siya sa June 6.

“Para clear lang na hindi ko sinusulot,” sey pa ni Rico.

Pangit naman daw kasi kung may lalabas na mga usap-usapan dahil nasa iisang network lang sila ng kapwa direktor.

Awa ng Diyos, okay daw ang naging reaksyon ni Direk Louie at wala raw isyu sa pagitan nila.

Nakapag-usap na rin sina Direk Rico at Mark Reyes, na katuwang niya sa paghawak ng Party Pilipinas.

“I’m sure kasi na may lalabas ding isyu ng comparison. But we agreed na let’s respect each other as a director.

“Kasi ang hirap, eh, fans will be fans. Gusto lang talaga nila na pagandahin ang kanilang show,” dagdag kuwento pa ni Direk Rico.

Ang isa pang gusto niyang linawin ay ang lumabas na item na bago tanggapin ang Party Pilipinas, may ilang kondisyones siyang ibinigay sa GMA bosses na sina Felipe Gozon at Jimmy Duavit.

Ang totoo raw, si Wilma Galvante ang kumausap sa kanya, hindi sina FLG at JD.

Wala rin daw siyang hininging mga kondisyones.

If at all, malaki ang pasasalamat ni Rico sa Kapuso bosses dahil sa patung-patong na trabahong ipinagkakatiwala sa kanya.

Maliban kasi sa Party Pilipinas at Take Me Out, siya rin ang direktor ng Pinoy Records, Kap’s Amazing Stories at Ripley’s Believe it Or Not.

May SNBO Special pa siyang kukunan with Richard Gutierrez na iere sa July at isang pelikula tungkol sa online gaming na RAN under GMA Films starring Richard pa rin opposite Rhian Ramos.

GMA Network says Q1 net income rose 71% to P855M

GMA Network Inc. said on Wednesday its net income in first quarter rose by almost two-thirds driven by revenues from political advertisements in the run up to the May 10 elections.

Its net income in the first quarter grew by 71 percent to P855 million from P501 million a year earlier, the company, whose shares are traded on the Philippine Stock Exchange said in a statement Wednesday.

Political advertisements backed up by revenue increases across all business units pushed GMA’s consolidated gross revenues from January to March to breach the P3-billion mark and settle at P3.625 billion - up by 37 percent P2.651 billion in the first three months of 2009.

“I am satisfied with the network's performance for the first quarter. Even without the political ads, we would still post modest gains in net income because of our operational efficiencies," company chairman, president, and CEO Felipe Gozon said in the statement.

Its earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization, or EBITDA, rose by 57 percent to P1.41 billion from P902 million in the same comparable period.
GMA said the network’s assets grew by over a tenth to P14.82 billion, with liabilities up by 8 percent to P3.09 billion.

Higher production costs, however, pushed the network’s operating expenses up by a fifth to P1.93 billion.

The network’s international units also posted gains, with GMA International’s subscription revenue reaching P235 million, or nearly a third up year-on-year on the back of a 19-percent rise in subscriber count to 250,000 for overseas channel GMA Pinoy TV (GPTV).

About 120,000 of GPTV subscribers also subscribe to GMA Life TV (GLTV), a second international channel airing lifestyle shows from the network’s local unit Q Channel 11. GLTV said its subscribers grew by 7 percent.

The subscriber counts for GPTV and GLTV were equivalent to 1.5 million and 800,000 viewers, respectively, the network said.1

GPTV was recently launched in Canada, as well as Alaska, Colorado, Florida, and Texas in the US. GLTV was also introduced in the states of Colorado, Central California, Texas and Florida, and in the China’s Hong Kong.

Both channels have already penetrated other parts of the US, Canada, Europe, Middle East, North Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Guam, Papua New Guinea, Singapore, and Hong Kong.

“[We have continued to expand our international operations] by signing a corporate agreement with Time Warner Cable and expanding into Comcast Systems. Although our international business has so much potential, napakasayang malaman na mas marami sa ating kababayan sa iba't ibang sulok ng mundo ay mga kapuso na natin (it is heart-warming to know that more of our compatriots are subscribe to our network)," Gozon said during the GMA’s stockholders’ meeting on Wednesday.

In the Philippines, GMA Network continued to expand its signal and facility projects, particularly in Matina (Davao City); Roxas City (Capiz); Dipolog (Zamboanga del Norte); Ozamis City (Misamis Occidental); San Jose City (Occidental Mindoro); and Kalibo (Aklan).

It also upgraded its projects in Virac (Catanduanes); Ormoc City (Leyte); Tagbilaran (Bohol); Santiago City (Isabela); and Jala-jala (Rizal).

The network said its engineering unit is exploring digital terrestrial television, a new technology that the company intends to incorporate in its operations.

“We are very much encouraged by the progress we had been making in all areas of our operations. The improvements in our financial position have allowed us to fulfill our commitment to our shareholders and provided them with better returns," Gozon said.
The company paid P2.19 billion in dividends in 2009, which was equivalent to 77 percent of GMA's total net income after tax of P2.08 billion.

“We shall continue to pursue new initiatives to achieve further growth from our international and regional operations, film ventures and syndications, and other businesses. We will always aim for the better and we have performed creditably well not only this year but also in the past year," Gozon said. —VS, GMANews.TV
