Richard Gutierrez surprised with list of celebrity castaways

“I’m doing my job, what’s personal is personal. Yun na lang naiwan sa akin ‘wag na natin palakihin," pakiusap niya. - FRJimenez, GMANews.TV

Wildlife fo Sale, Mauunang Ipalabas Kesa sa Anatomy of a Disaster!

Epitomizing an Endless Love

A Review of the Pilot Episode of Endless Love
by ex deo scientia

I guess a lot have said their piece about the pilot episode of Endless Love. Let me share my thoughts.

Cinematography. Endless Love has the best cinematography for a GMA drama, beating even Stairway to Heaven. I loved the aerial shots of the two kids as they were biking down the fields; they were reminiscent of the original. The camera angles were also very good, although I would have wanted more tracking shots; maybe in the coming days. I'm not sure if they used 24p cameras, but the first episode was undoubtedly glossy.

Acting. Great performances, notably from Sandy Andolong and Janice De Belen. The young actors also portrayed their characters very well. In particular, I liked Kathryn Bernardo and Joyce Ching. They were very effective and convincing. I am looking forward to future scenes where Kathryn will be acting alongside Sandy and Janice. I am sure they'll make our tear ducts well up with tears. Tirso Cruz III was satisfactory; anyway, his character was not so important in the original story.

Screenplay. Because they stuck to the original storyline, there were no loopholes in the script. I just wished there was that birthday scene where Johnny gave everybody in the family their cups with their faces on them. However, the minor revisions in the plot, for example the replacement of that scene where Johnny was teasing Jenny about her having boobs, are adapted to the highly conservative culture of the Filipino where talk about puberty is almost taboo. The dialog was also well-thought of. I was thinking about whether the script was very open to adlib because the lines used by the actors were very natural, commonplace and ordinary. It was as if they were not using a script at all.

Editing. I liked the transition from one scene to another. Fast-paced scenes were connected abruptly, while slow and moving scenes were highlighted as the transition to the next scene and camera shot was very subtle.

Sound. One of the good things about the original version was its sound and background music. I hope GMA invests in dubbing instead of using the sound which was originally used in the recording. This makes speech prone to influence from ambient sources. There were scenes where wind, rain, and vehicles overpowered the dialog because ambient noise was more pronounced. This would be overcome by dubbing.

Music. I loved the background music of the original. I was happy to hear some familiar tunes--Reason (piano) and Tears (piano)--but I was clearly unhappy with the team not using the original theme song, the Tagalog version Reason, Ikaw, as sung by Faith Cuneta. One of first Endless Love's most memorable elements was this. I am in agreement with some of the comments here; anyone who has seen the original and listened to the Filipino dub of the theme song would find Rachel Anne Go's version disturbing, almost as if problematic with the notes and sounding pitchy. On a lighter note, I hope to hear Romance (in guitar or piano), Sincerely and Prayer in the coming days. And I really appreciated the remake's homage to the original by using Tears for the highly emotional scenes.

Sound Editing. If the music was partly a disappointment, I found that there was a problem in the sound and music editing as well. I didn't like the transition of the piano theme (which was clearly Reason--the main theme) to Rachel Anne Go's Ikaw Lang in the scene where they were biking along the rice fields. That didn't sound very well. It sounded like they were cross-fading the same song in different keys.

Props. I liked the use of props here in the remake. They were very realistic. Here are some good examples of the great use of props: Johnny showing his artistic prowess by painting a very realistic mountain scene; Johnny's trash bin where he threw used paint; the seemingly brand new 90s car used by Johnny's parents. That car was the best props of all; they could have just used an old 90s car since they're very much available nowadays from various car resellers, but they chose one that looked new, at least from the timeline of Johnny's teenage years because it symbolized their affluence in the society.

Differences from the original. One who has watched the Korean version will obviously find that the remake has taken the liberty of departing from the original in some trivial details. However, the most important departure was the scene where Jenny and Shirley were switched in the nursery. The original emphasizes that Johnny switched the names of the two girls, and in doing so, declares to the viewer that he is the cause, the person responsible for the destinies of Jenny and Shirley. The remake takes this burden away from Johnny and puts it on some good-for-nothing and forgettable nurse.

Overall, I really liked the pilot; the one-hour run-time was definitely worth watching. While there were some minor differences in the remake, they paid homage to one of the most bittersweet stories ever created for television by sticking to the overall plot and executing even some of the most trivial details.

I give this pilot a 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Sabi Atty. Felipe Gozon (presidente ng GMA) patungkol sa industriya ng telebisyon, “In this very dynamic industry, you have to be ahead everytime.”

“You just have to research jurisprudence,” aniya pa.

“May sawa factor na siguro, and the televiewers want something different,” sabi ni Atty. Gozon.

“Ganu’n talaga. ‘Yung Sis, ang tagal-tagal sa ere, sampung programa yata ang nagpalit-palit.

“And then they hit with Showtime.”

ABS-CBN claims lead in Mega Manila ratings anew from GMA Network

ABS-CBN Corp. yesterday claimed to have taken the lead anew in terms of television ratings, saying it beat rival GMA Network, Inc. from June 1 to 14 nationwide, in “Mega Manila,” and in Metro Manila.

This was confirmed by Kantar Media, formerly Taylor Nelson Sofres (TNS).

Kantar Media General Manager Gabriel Buluran said ABS-CBN had a 44% audience share in the national level compared with GMA Network’s 30% for the period of June 1 to 14 while in Mega Manila, ABS-CBN got a 36% audience versus GMA Network’s 33%.

In Metro Manila, ABS-CBN got a 38% audience share, higher than GMA Network’s 30%, he said.

“ABS-CBN is leading now because of its programming. Its lineup of shows in prime time is leading compared with GMA. In the morning, ABS-CBN is still leading, followed by TV5 and then GMA. In the afternoon, ABS-CBN remains in the lead followed by GMA,” Mr. Buluran told BusinessWorld in a telephone interview yesterday.

On a year-on-year comparison, ABS-CBN’s audience share in Mega Manila grew by 0.8 points from 35.2% in June 2009, while GMA Network’s audience share decreased by seven points from 40% in June 2009.

“ABS-CBN, on the other hand, kept its stronghold in Metro Manila with its lead widening to 38% vs GMA’s 30%,” he said.

Meanwhile, 14 out of the overall top 20 programs nationwide for the period are from ABS-CBN.

“Agua Bendita is number one with an average rating of 39.5%.

ABS-CBN’s newly launched teleserye Momay proved to be a strong contender, occupying the 9th spot with 25.7%,” Mr. Buluran said.

In a statement, listed ABS-CBN said its early evening newscast topped that of GMA Network based on national ratings from Kantar Media.

“When it comes to news, most Filipinos watch TV Patrol World. It is the number one new program with an average rating of 33.2%, higher than rival 24 Oras with 22.2%. During Election Day, the whole nation tuned in to TV Patrol World for election-related news and information as it topped the national TV ratings survey on May 10 with 31.5% trouncing its competition 24 Oras.”

It added: “The country’s biggest talent-reality show Pilipinas Got Talent topped weekend programming. Its finale held last June 6 at the Araneta Coliseum hit a whopping 43.8%, the second-highest weekend rating recorded by Kantar Media after Pinoy Big Brother Double Up’s Big Night with 44.6%.”

Officials of GMA Network could not be reached for comment. --

Would ABS-CBN Let Sarah Geronimo GO?

DUE to the expiration of her contract with ABS-CBN, Sarah Geronimo has been noticeably absent from “ASAP XV.”

Amidst speculations arising from the alleged offer of the rival network GMA7 which is rumored to pay Sarah five times the amount she is presently getting from ABS-CBN.

But some are of the opinion that the Kapamilya network would match whatever talent fee Sarah’s manager may ask during the renewal of the contract.

How should ABS-CBN evaluate matters like these? Just asking…

Sa muling pamamayagpag ng ABS-CBN.. "IT'S JUST A WAKE UP CALL" -- Atty. Felipe Gozon

Felipe Gozon at COO Jimmy Duavit.

"I hate to admit," sabi ni Atty. Gozon sa entertainment editors. "Naging kampante kami". Ayon pa sa kanya, kapag nangunguna ka, "The tendency is to make easy. In this industry, you have to be ahead, you have to to know what the audience wants. Tha'ts why I enjoy this job more than my previous one (lawyer). Dito lahat, dapat bago".

Inamin ni Atty. Gozon na may mga show na silang tinatalo o tinalo ng mga programa ng Dos.

"For example, 'yong Sis," kuwento niya. "Ang tagal, 'yun ang nananalo sa slot na 'yun. Ang daming itinapat du'n pero hindi natinag. Nakatsamba sila (ABS-CBN) sa Showtime. Talo ang Dis Iz It. So we have to change it. By August, papalitan na 'yang Diz iz It."

"Bubble is almost synonymous na with GMA," sabi ni Mr. Duavit.

"We're not thinking of replacing Bubble Gang," susong naman ni Atty. Gozon.

"We just consider it a wake-up call," patuloy ni Atty. Gozon. "We're still in a good position and we will surmount it".

Jolina Magdangal booted out of 'Party Pilipinas'

Singer-actress Jolina Magdangal is no longer in the cast of the GMA-7 Sunday musical variety show, “Party Pilipinas.”

A source close to the actress confirmed so to Bulletin Entertainment. The source, however, did not disclose the reason Jolens got the boot. The source merely hinted at some sort of politicking behind the scenes.

Sundays ago, Jolina posted an intriguing tweet message. In her June 12, 11:52 tweet, she said, “wala ako sa party pilipinas bukas sa malalim na dahilan.”

Before that, Jolina was very ecstatic that she was chosen to be a regular host of “Party Pilipinas” as this afforded her the chance to display her new look on a more regular basis. She even hired a team of experts to style her every week and give her a different look.

“Iba naman ngayon ang team na kinuha ko for the look, e. Para iba-iba. Basta ako naman, feeling ko, ano na lang, kapag napapanood nila ang ‘Party Pilipinas,’ para silang nanonood ng magazine, fashion magazine," she says in one interview.

Jolina received criticisms for her new look, which some quarters said was a poor copycat of pop icon Lady Gaga. But Jolina took all these in stride and said she cannot please everybody.

In a past interview, she said she wanted to sport a glam-edgy look akin to that of her idol Rihanna.

Because of this recent development in the “Party Pilipinas” camp, there had been reports that Jolina went to Singapore to unwind and to get over her depression after getting ejected from the show.

Currently, Jolina has no show on GMA-7. Jolina’s two shows “Dear Friend” and “Panday Kids” had also gone off the air.

Despite this, she remains a Kapuso star as her contract with the network is still active.

Gary reveals new TV show with Martin; compares ‘ASAP’ with ‘Party Pilipinas’

Because Gary Valenciano could pass for an NBA coach when he speaks to – and consequently inspires – people, entertainment scribes asked him if he will consider hosting a talk show in the future. Instead, he was forced to disclose on Friday to Bulletin Entertainment and other media that a major TV project is underway, “One that Martin Nievera and I will be hosting.”

Mr. Pure Energy held back the details but said, “It’s one of the exciting things that are to come now that I’ve signed again with ABS-CBN.” Gary and son Gabriel Valenciano renewed their contracts recently with Kapamilya network.

“I’m open to doing talk shows,” he added.

On ‘Party Pilipinas’ and offers from GMA

Gary also denied there have been offers from the Kapuso channel. “There were no offers. I don’t know if they [GMA] talk about it there but as far as I know, wala talaga.”

“ASAP” allows Gary to feel like he’s only 30, he said. “When I perform in the show, it’s like I’m only 30 or even 27 and I’m 45 with performers around me half my age. That’s how the show makes me feel.”

The “ASAP” cast is also unfazed by threats from “Party Pilipinas.” Gary explained, “This is how I see the stage of ‘Party Pilipinas:’ From what I’ve seen on YouTube, it’s a big stage. It’s a huge stage that’s [not exactly a venue for] partying. It’s a concert stage. In ‘ASAP,’ our stage is smaller, more intimate and more like [a venue] for a party.”

He also commented on former “ASAP” artists like Mark Bautista and Rachelle Ann Go who moved to GMA. “Come to think of it, isn’t it amazing that in order to beef up the other show, they (‘Party Pilipinas’) would have to get artists from our show (‘ASAP’)? For our part, we take it (competition) as it happens because it allows us to see the good sign of things.”

Gary the father

Since on Sunday is Father’s Day, Gary revealed that he believes in the saying “spare the rod, spoil the child.” Valenciano intimated that his children experienced the disciplinarian in him particularly when they were younger.

“Pag may nagawa silang mali, I had to explain that I’m doing this, that I have to hit them with a belt or tsinelas, because they have hurt others and the pain that they caused others because of the mistake they did hurt more than this belt would hurt,” he shared.

Gabriel said he always got “the belt.“Pag ako naman talaga ang may mali, he (Gary) always uses the belt. But growing up, I had a happy childhood.”

The same disciplinarian also taught Gabriel this valuable lesson: “My dad always tells me to use the losses you have to win bigger battles.”

(Father and son will have a special show on Sunday at 5 p.m. at SM Skydome after “ASAP.” On July 16, Gary and Martin will do another repeat of “As One.” Gabriel will also guest in Jericho Rosales’ concert at the Cache Creek in Sacramento, California on June 26 and 27.)

Mark Bautista: "It's time to grow as an artist"

“I think everything just fell into place. It’s God’s will.”

These were the words uttered by “Pop Heartthrob” Mark Bautista when asked to describe his being a comebacking Kapuso star in an interview with The FREEMAN during his recent visit to Cebu.

According to Mark, he did not really transfer from ABS-CBN, where he used to be regularly seen on its musical-variety show “ASAP,” but that he just returned to GMA-7.

The versatile singer-actor is now back in his original home network as he signed a three-year guaranteed exclusive contract with GMA-7last March 11 together with his manager, Veronique del Rosario of Viva Artist Agency.

“I did not really transfer from ABS (CBN). This is more of a sweet comeback, because I really started with GMA,” said Mark.

It can be recalled that before Mark became a Kapamilya, he was, in 2003, a performer on “SOP” along with Sarah Geronimo. It was a stint they both earned after winning in “Star for a Night” (he placed first runner-up to Geronimo)—Viva’s singing competition that was hosted by Regine Velasquez and aired on IBC-13.

But eventually he had to leave “SOP” because Viva Artist Agency, his talent management agency, moved him and Sarah to the Kapamilya Network.

While at ABS-CBN, Mark made his mark as a performer, becoming one of the regulars at the top-rating Sunday musical-variety show “ASAP.”

He had acting stints as well. He was part of the teleseryes Sarah: The Teen Princess, Kampanerang Kuba, Sana Maulit Muli and May Bukas Pa. He was also seen in the episodes of Wansapanataym, Maalaala Mo Kaya and Your Song Presents.

Through the years, or at least in the seven years that he was with ABS-CBN, Mark has remained with Viva’s stable of artists, which also includes Anne Curtis and Rachelle Ann Go, who also just recently became a Kapuso again. Mark, who jumpstarted his career via the pioneering singing contest “Star for a Night” several years ago, then rose to prominence by getting identified with Sarah Geronimo as perennial partner in concerts, commercials, and TV projects.

His return to GMA may mean leaving longstanding friends, including Sarah, and projects behind, but it’s not hard to understand that his latest career move also means moving to greener pastures and bigger opportunities for growth as an artist.

He has signed up for three shows with the Kapuso network. One is the Sunday musical-variety show, “Party Pilipinas,” which replaced “SOP” and is the rival of “ASAP.” He will be joining the ranks of musical stalwarts Regine Velasquez, Ogie Alcasid, Janno Gibbs, and Jaya.

He is also expected to guest on primetime musical TV series “Diva” and is slated to tackle a leading man role in a primetime drama series.

“Everything moved in a fast-paced mode. I was surprised that they came up with a decision that really fast. Both Viva and ABS (CBN) agreed on it. That’s why I could say that everything really fell into place. This is the right time and it’s God’s will,” enthused Mark.

“As artists, we really need to grow. I believe that returning to my home network was God’s plan for me to grow as an individual and as a performer,” said Mark.

He also belied reports that he was not happy at his management’s decision to move him back to GMA-7.

“That is not true. I’m happy with my return to GMA. They are giving me great chances to be developed as an artist,” he said.

The singer stressed that he cannot ask for anything more right now, saying instead that he’s looking forward to a brighter future for his career with GMA.

“I felt pressured, yes, but I felt more excited because I’m sure that GMA will be strongly backing me,” said Mark.

A Mark Bautista fanatic and blogger said, “We can’t blame Mark if he decides to switch networks because he doesn’t have much projects on ABS-CBN. But I thought Mark already got the needed exposure on ABS-CBN when it comes to concerts abroad. Or maybe he wanted more.”

During the interview, Mark was queried about his lovelife. Mark once dated the Fil-Canadian beauty queen and “Pinoy Big Brother: Celebrity Edition 2” housemate, Riza Santos. Then in 2008, Mark publicly declared his intentions to court the “Pop Princess” Sarah Geronimo after knowing each other for so long.

No romantic relationship between the two has emerged since he became vocal about his admiration, although in an interview late last year, Sarah said that Mark has been a persistent and consistent suitor, and who knows, they might end up together.

After he and Sarah were last paired together in the TV series “Pangarap na Bituin,” Mark admitted that his former co-star has gone a long way since he first met her, but only in terms of career. He said that despite Sarah’s growing popularity, she has remained level-headed and grounded—and that’s what he really likes about her.

“Sarah has never changed. What she was like before and what she is like now—nothing has changed. She has improved a lot as an artist, but her humility is irreplaceable. Of course, as an artist, she needs to elevate her level of artistry and she was able to improve it. I guess those were just the simple changes that I saw in her, but attitude-wise, she’s not changed despite her popularity,” Mark said.

And while his return to GMA-7 will now greatly minimize the opportunities to share the stage with Sarah, he believes that this will not in any way change the good friendship that they share. He said, “Our friendship will always be there.”

Mark was in the US just this May as the special guest of Sarah’s “Record Breaker” series of concerts.
