Puwede raw peg ng Ilumina ay Charmed at Twilight, but without the vampire.

“I can’t run the show alone, I can’t do it alone. Our communication is open, there’s no time for competition, I’m so busy. Pareho kami ng rule na no rehearsal, no performance, pero mas strict siya sa akin. As for an episode collaboration, wow! Powerful show ‘yun kung mangyari.”

GMA-7 denies Willie!

GMA-7 has denied that embattled TV host Willie Revillame is transferring to the network.

Butch S. Raquel, VP for Corporate Communications GMA-7, stressed this in a statement.

“GMA Network strongly denies reports that host Willie Revillame is being offered to transfer to the Network. These reports are baseless and untrue,” said the statement.

Pinay Boxing Champ Julaton wins ratings too !

After winning her third world title at the Casino Rama in Ontario, Canada, Pinay boxing pride Ana Julaton came home to the Philippines for the first time, and swept the hearts of Filipinos like “The Hurricane” she is best known as.

This translated to a ratings victory, too, for the Pinay boxing champ as “Laban ng Pinay: Julaton vs. Villalobos” “ The Hurricane’s victorious match against Mexico’s Maria Elena Villalobos “ aired on GMA-7 last Sunday, July 18, fared well in Mega Manila ratings, according to the more widely recognized TV ratings data service, Nielsen TV Audience Measurement.

“Laban ng Pinay: Julaton vs. Villalobos” posted an average TV household rating of 15.3 percent (based on overnight ratings), compared to the 9.2 percent of ABS-CBN’s “Sandugo: AJ Banal vs. Big Yoo,” resulting to a commanding lead of 6.1 percent. “Laban ng Pinay” also edged out ASAP XV, 15.3 versus 12.5, when it went up against the early part of the rival station’s Sunday noontime show.

Mega Manila comprises 55 percent of total urban television households nationwide. It includes Metro Manila and suburbs “ parts of Bulacan, Pampanga, Cavite, Laguna, and Rizal. Estimates derived from NSO data & AGB Nielsen’s Establishment Survey percentages indicate that Cavite suburbs comprise 94.7 percent of total urban TV households in the province of Cavite; while Laguna suburbs comprise 66.4 percent of total urban TV households in the Laguna province. Rizal suburbs, on the other hand, comprise 96.6 percent of total urban TV households in the province of Rizal.

“Laban ng Pinay: Julaton vs. Villalobos” showed how Julaton crowned herself as the new World Boxing Organization (WBO) Super Bantamweight champ via split decision over Villalobos. With this victory, Julaton redeemed herself after suffering from a unanimous decision loss at the hands of Lisa Brown last March.

Last week, The Hurricane came home to a hero’s welcome courtesy of GMA Network and its flagship international channel, GMA Pinoy TV. Aside from her homecoming to Pozzorubio, Pangasinan, she had guest appearances in several Kapuso shows such as Eat Bulaga, Unang Hirit and Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho, and was also the special guest during the Network’s general assembly.

The Pinay boxing pride also paid a courtesy call to President Noynoy Aquino in Malacañang Palace.

Gerald Santos opens up on alleged molestation attempt

“Pinoy Pop Superstar” season 2 grand champion Gerald Santos reveals the sordid details that may have led to his falling off the entertainment radar following his win in 2006.

Although the show has long been canned, Santos resurfaced on “Paparazzi” on July 25 to talk about what had happened to him that may have led to his losing opportunities within the business—including allegedly being summarily dismissed from GMA's Sunday variety show “SOP.”

Alluding to an alleged molestation attempt by a manager/composer, and also referred to by a host on the show as a musical director, Santos clarified that he and his family decided to tell on the alleged perpetrator because they were already feeling the “effect” of the man’s action towards him and his reaction to this.

As the hosts clarified that he basically was saying his refusal of the man’s advances resulted in him losing his show and exposure on the network, he replied, “Parang ganun po.”

Santos said that the incident first happened while he was still a part of the contest, and that several attempts went on after he had already won. Saying that he was just 15-years-old then, the now 20-year-old said that it took him and his party almost two years to bring up the charges because he was already feeling the effects on his career, which was going nowhere.

Tracing the timeline, he recalled, “Natakot po kasi ako, kasi Grand Finalist pa lang po ako nun eh… After one year pa po nung manalo ako.”

Santos said the matter worsened because the network executives they complained to did not act on the matter. “Ang nakaka-disappoint po kasi ang sagot lang po sa amin, ‘Just move on, matagal na ‘yun’…”

The young singer revealed now, “Hindi pa po tapos ang kontrata ko, nagpa-release lang po kami. As an artist po, gusto ko ring mag-grow.

When asked to relate an incident to prove that he was indeed a victim of a molestation attempt, Santos related that back when there were just three grand finalists on the show, the perpetrator allegedly invited him to a show in Iloilo, but without the other two contestants.

Santos insisted that he considered the man’s influence to be a big factor in his stalled career. But apparently, this year marked a turn of events for him and his family. When a letter they sent to a GMA executive in January did not yield any result, they decided to go straight to another GMA boss, Atty. Felipe Gozon, chief executive and chair of GMA Network, Inc.

“Nag meeting kami nang March,” Santos said. ‘Yun nga po sabi nila, gusto nila i-pursue yung case, ‘So ‘wag ka munang umalis.’

But Santos said he will no longer pursue the case from his end because GMA has already taken over the reins of pursuing the suspected perpetrator.

Despite having been released from GMA’s stable of talents, Santos’ message to his bosses at his former network is this: “Nagpapasalamat pa rin po ako, forever grateful po ako sa kanila.

Ad spending up in first half

Radio gains but TV still dominant; print stays steady

SPENDING ON advertisements went up by a fifth in the first half as broadcasters hiked rates and consumer products slugged it out with politicians for paid airtime.

But more ads went to radio, which has surged in recent years as audience measurement data became available, while print managed to keep its share of the pie because of election placements.

Data from media research firm Nielsen showed that ad spending, based on published rate cards, hit P108.6 billion in January to June, up by 19% from last year on higher outlays by government agencies and political candidates, personal care products and detergents.

Television accounted for 74% of total ad spending, while radio took 21% of the pie and print stayed at 5%. Compared with the same period last year, TV shed one percentage point in favor of radio.

Volume went up by 9% to 5.09 million advertising spots, with radio and print gaining by 12% and 3%, respectively, at the expense of TV which lost 5%. Radio minutes also rose by 13% while TV was down by 7%.

Advertisers are said to be flocking to radio as it is a "mobile medium." Filipinos also tend to stick to one radio station, unlike in television where viewers "surf channels," said Jay G. Bautista, executive director for media of The Nielsen Co. (Philippines), Inc.

"Radio is going to grow. It still has a lot of capacity [for advertisements]," Mr. Bautista told BusinessWorld. The radio market is dominated by Manila Broadcasting Co., ABS-CBN Corp., Radio Mindanao Network, and GMA Network, Inc., with revenues split equally between AM and FM stations.

On television, 95% of ads went to free channels and the rest to cable, unchanged from last year. Product placements within TV programs themselves are growing as networks maximize ad revenues from limited airtime. But product placements on ABS-CBN shows outpaced those on GMA Network four-to-one, Nielsen data showed.

Taking out the almost triple increase in political ads, spending still rose by a tenth as firms like Unilever Philippines, Inc. and Procter & Gamble Philippines, Inc. hiked their budgets to introduce new products.

For the first time in about a decade, Colgate-Palmolive Philippines, Inc. began placing ads on ABS-CBN instead of only GMA Network previously, amid a business spat with the SM retail group that took off Colgate toothpastes and Palmolive soaps and shampoos off supermarket shelves last year. Colgate doubled spending on toothpaste ads while rivals Unilever and Procter & Gamble hiked budgets for detergents and shampoos by more than half.

Ice cream ads went up by three-quarters amid the dry spell caused by El Niño. But food manufacturers and pharmaceutical firms retreated, particularly from the February-to-May election campaign period, to avoid the "clutter" of political ads, Mr. Bautista said.

Telcos barely moved as they have been shifting to nontraditional advertising to keep mobile subscribers, Mr. Bautista said. Moreover, TV networks ABS-CBN and GMA were said to be now charging Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) standard rates, instead of discounted ones, since the PLDT group’s acquisition of TV5 last year.

ABS-CBN and GMA Network declined to comment.

Local advertising has largely been spared by the global economic downturn considering the Philippine market is dominated by fast-moving consumer goods, Mr. Bautista said.

"In the second half, more of those who held back in the first half will start spending again -- pharmaceuticals, beverages. Consumer confidence is on the rise and people have a more positive outlook," he said.

Mediaquest Holdings, Inc., a unit of the Beneficial Trust Fund of PLDT, has a minority stake in BusinessWorld.

GMA-7 loses rating war, vows to reclaim top spot

GMA Network Inc. conceded the rating war to ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp. and promised to “regain superiority,” especially in Mega Manila.

“In a way we are glad that the ratings of ABS-CBN woke us up, we just have to regain superiority,” GMA Network chairman, president and chief executive Felipe Gozon told reporters late Friday.

GMA Channel 7 and ABS-CBN Channel 2 engaged in a tight race in audience share in May and June, with the Lopez-led TV network grabbing a slight the lead in the national, Mega Manila and Metro Manila ratings.

“We began to recognize that we have to do something, we need to start all over again,” Gozon said, adding that GMA Network was now “on the road to the superiority that we want on them, so we can brag again.”

“We have regained the momentum,” he said, referring to Channel 7’s widening lead in Mega Manila and Luzon ratings in the first two weeks of July.

Meanwhile, Gozon said GMA Network was now ready for the country’s transition to digital TV. He estimated the additional investments for fully switching off from analog TV at less than P500 million.

“The equipment we buy are all digital ready,” he said, adding that GMA Network could switch off in less than two months once ordered by the government.

The National Telecommunications Commission has chosen Japan’s integrated services digital broadcasting technology for the country’s transition from analog to digital TV.
