Aga Muhlach, maghohost ng Amazing Race (Philippines)?

Kamakailan lamang ay lumabas ang balitang nakuha na ng TV5 ang rights para magkaroon ng sariling bersyon ng Amazing Race at ngayon naman, sa pagpirma ni Aga Muhlach sa TV5 ay lumakas ang bulong-bulungan na siya na nga ang napiling maghost noon.

Ito ang unang pagsabak ni Aga Muhlach sa isang franchised-reality show at dito masusubukan ang kakaibang galing niya sa paghost. Goodluck kay Aga at sa TV5.

Three-year non-exclusive contract ang pinirmahan ni Aga Muhlach sa TV5. Tatlong malalaking proyekto ang nakatakda niyang gawin sa TV5. Ang una niyang project ay lalabas sa June. Posibleng isang reality show ang una niyang gawin. Franchise ng isang sikat na reality show.

Claudine Barretto nagsisisi na lumipat ng GMA 7?

Isa si Claudine sa mga homegrown talents ng ABS-CBN noon at nasubaybayan ng publiko ang kanyang pag-grow bilang isang aktres. Halos hindi rin siya nawawalan ng pro­ject nung siya’y Kapamilya pa.

Pero nang magdesisyon si Claudine na maging Kapuso, kahit maganda ang naging welcome sa kanya at agad siyang nagkaroon ng weekly drama anthology, hindi gaanong naka-take off ang nasabing programa in terms of rating kaya hindi rin ito tumagal sa ere.

Captain Barbell makes a spectacular comeback on GMA Telebabad

Nearly five years after its original television debut, Captain Barbell takes flight once more as GMA-7 launches the exciting new sequel to the action-adventure series this March 28. The story promises to be more exciting, and the visual effects more amazing, as the greatest Pinoy superhero returns with a new league of extraordinary beings with astounding superpowers.

Richard Gutierrez reinterprets his role as the superhero Captain Barbell, and his alter ego, Teng. While Richard has immensely grown as an actor, so did Captain Barbell, who is now set to take on a greater mantle of protecting good from evil, still bearing of course, his iconic red cape.

The story picks up where it left off from the first series with Teng and his besotted Leah (Rhian Ramos) settling down in the city. But their simple life takes a dark turn when Leah is killed and becomes a heart donor to an undisclosed recipient.

In the spirit of true heroism, Captain Barbell fights through his sorrow and continues his quest for peace and order. He meets his strongest opponent in Nero (Christopher de Leon), an evil genius, who became rich through his malevolent ways. Teng, on the other hand, clashes with Gregor (TJ Trinidad), whose father owns the tenement where Teng lives.

Meanwhile, during a freak storm formed by Nero, Captain Barbell helps a woman give birth in the tenement. This woman soon dies thus leaving Teng with the responsibility of taking care of the child, whom Teng names Leah or Lelay (Jillian Ward). At the same time, a strong lightning strikes Teng’s barbell, which in turn spreads unique superpowers among some of the tenants.

Years later, these tenants begin to discover their newfound gifts with some of them choosing to harness their superpowers for good, others for evil. One of them is Gregor, who has grown more jealous and hateful towards Teng. Gregor teams up with Nero, and along with the other supervillains, declares war against Captain Barbell.

On the other hand, General Armando (Eddie Gutierrez), a rich philanthropist, joins forces with Captain Barbell, and urges him to pool together the new league of superheroes.

As Captain Barbell/Teng braves the dark forces, he will also struggle with matters of the heart as he tries to uncover whom between his kind next-door neighbor Melanie (Isabel Oli) and Lelay’s school teacher Althea (Lovi Poe) received Leah’s heart. He will also cross paths with two other ladies who will likewise play important roles in his life, his arrogant boss Anita (Michelle Madrigal) and the avid news reporter Jana (Solenn Heusaff).

With his extraordinary strength, unmatched fighting skills and nearly invincible armor, can Captain Barbell together with the ‘Liga ng Kalayaan’ successfully take down the supervillains, and defend his name as the ultimate protector of peace? How will he uncover the identity of Leah’s myst erious recipient? Which superheroes will form the ‘Liga ng Kalayaan’ and who will side with the evil Nero?

Four lovely and capable actresses, Isabel Oli, Lovi Poe, Michelle Madrigal and Solenn Heusaff add color to Teng/Captain Barbell’s life, while lovable child wonder Jillian Ward stars as the superhero’s sidekick/pseudo-adopted daughter. Rhian Ramos reprises her role as Leah in the pilot week of the show.

Led by veteran actor and Richard’s real life father Eddie Gutierrez, the Liga ng Kalayaan are Bianca King as Lary, General Armando’s fearless assistant; Mike Tan as Teban, a former thief-turned-ally of Captain Barbell; Jake Vargas as Alden, a young superhero who has a top as his weapon of choice; Bea Binene as Misha, another young superhero who wields power with her sword; and Frencheska Farr as Celina, the superheroine with a sonic voice.

On the other side, multi-award-winning actor Christopher de Leon heads the supervillains as Nero. Joining him are TJ Trinidad as Gregor, Teng/Captain Barbell’s fiercest enemy next to Nero; Paolo Paraiso as Rodel, the sandman; Akihiro Sato as Bruno, the hulkman; Elvis Gutierrez as Gaston, a superhero with the ability to create weapons using only his mind; Ervic Vijandre as Ricky, the flash; Sam Pinto as Sammy, the age-shifting supervillain; Ellen Adarna as Kat, the undecided sexy superhero; and Jon Hall as Rob, Anita’s egotistic business partner.

Completing the star-studded cast are Marky Lopez as Hekki, Jana’s assistant; and Ces Quesada as Tiya Lita, Lelay’s manipulative aunt.

This modern interpretation of the Mars Ravelo classic takes it a notch higher as it utilizes cutting edge 3D technology and computer-generated images or CGI in retelling the legendary story. Story-wise, 2011’s Captain Barbell promises to be more dramatic, action-packed and fast-paced than ever before.

The production design is by Australian production designer Peter Collias, who also designed the sets of international blockbusters “The Matrix” and “Moulin Rouge”, together with his Filipino counterpart Digo Ricio. The costumes are manufactured by Hong Kong based-costume maker Emily Lai of Cubedecor, while the script is written by senior creative consultant RJ Nuevas under the creative guidance of Jun Lana. Singing the theme song “Sandata” is the Pinoy rock band Shamrock.

Ace director Dominic Zapata, who has helmed top-rating fantaseryes such as Mulawin, Darna, and the first Captain Barbell, will direct this Captain Barbell sequel.

Maxene, kinikilig kina Elmo at Julieanne

Boto si Maxene Magalona na itinatambal ng Party Pilipinas ang kapatid niyang si Elmo Magalona kay Julieanne San Jose.

Kinikilig si Maxene sa production number ng dalawa.

Biniro ko si Maxene na baka may something romantic going on between her younger brother and Julieanne.

“Ay, boto ako na sila ang pinagpapareha kesa sa iba pa ang ipareha kay Elmo. Pero hanggang ‘yung parang love team lang sila, pero wala munang ligawan,” simula ni Maxene.

Mas gusto ni Maxene na mag-concentrate muna si Elmo sa career nito.

Pagpasok ni Elmo ng dressing room after ng production number nila ni Julieanne, inusisa ni Maxene ang kapatid.

“Elmo, sinisita ako ni Jun Lalin.

Tinatanong ako kung may girlfriend ka na. I told him na career ang priority mo,” sey ni Maxene sa kapatid.

“Wala pa po akong girlfriend. Career po muna talaga,” sabi ni Elmo.

My gosh, kino-control ni Maxene ang lovelife ni Elmo?

“Hindi naman, pero siya naman mismo ang nagsasabing career muna,” sabi pa ni Maxene.

Bayani Agbayani, Balik TV5!

Balik TV5 ulit si Bayani Agbayani. Makakasama nga siya sa project na Bangis ni Oyo Sotto sa Kapatid Network.

May gagawin din daw siyang project sa TV5 na kung saan ay si Aga Muhlach naman ang kasama niya.
Kuwento ni Bayani, freelancer daw siya ngayon. Mula raw nu’ng nagpa-release siya ng kontrata sa GMA 7, hindi raw muna siya pumirma ng exclusive contract.

Sabi ni Bayani sa akin nang makatsikahan namin sa victory party ni Dolly Anne Carvajal na nagwagi bilang best entertainment columnist sa Gawad Tanglaw, nagpa-release na siya sa Kapuso Network bago pa man magsara ang 2010.

Dapat sana ay may isang taon pa siyang kontrata sa GMA, pero nagpa-release na raw siya agad dahil wala naman daw naibibigay na project ang GMA sa kanya.

Ang naging regular show lang daw niya sa GMA ay ang Diz Is It, na prodyus pa ng TAPE, Inc. At ang ibang show na nilabasan niya sa GMA ay puro semi-regular lang daw.

Nilinaw ni Bayani na wala siyang hinanakit o tampo o galit sa GMA. Gusto lang daw niyang magtrabaho.

Anyway, dapat daw ay kasama siya sa sitcom ni Cesar Montano sa GMA na Andres de Saya, pero wala raw siyang idea kung kalian `yon magsisimula. Nainip na raw siya na magka-project sa GMA, kaya minabuti niyang lumipat sa TV5.

GMA7 to air Miss World Philippines’ coronation night!

If there’s no ABS-CBN2 crew at the grand launching of the Miss World Philippines this Wednesday at the SMDC Grand Showroom at the Mall of Asia, that’s because competitor GMA7 is the pageant’s official television carrier.

Franchisor Cory Quirino will announce the nationwide screening dates in SM malls all over the country. 1993 Miss World second princess Ruffa Gutierrez will not attend as she has a Mga Nagbabagang Bulaklak taping which pilots tonight over TV5.

But other representatives to Miss World beauty pageant such as Evangeline Pascual are sure to attend.

Eat Bulaga, hanggang 2015 pa ang kontrata sa GMA!

Extended ang kontrata ng Eat Bulaga sa GMA network hanggang 2015. Ginawa ang pirmahan ng kontrata last week na dinaluhan ng TAPE boss na sina Tony Tuviera, Tito, Vic and Joey, Allan K, Anjo Yllana, Ruby Rodriguez, Jimmy Santos at Malou Choa Fagar.

Sa side naman ng GMA, present sa signing sina Atty. Felipe Gozon, Gilberto R. Duavit at iba pang top executives ng network.

“Laganap kasi ang mga tsismis na lilipat ang Eat Bulaga. So sabi namin, mas mabuting ipagtibay na namin ang samahan. Parang napaaga lang ang renewal of vows!” paliwanag ni Mr. Duavit sa biglaang extension ng kontrata ng longest running noontime show.

Nagpahayag din si Mr. Tuviera ng side nila sa tsismis na lilipat sa ibang network ang prodyus nilang programa.

“Wala namang intension para umalis (sa GMA). Maganda naman ang aming pagsasama. Sixteen years na kami. Totoo ‘yon. Parang renewal of vows lang ito ngayon. Magkatulong kami. Wala kaming pinag-aawayan. Wala kaming disgusto sa isa’t isa!” pahayag ng TAPE/EB boss.

Although block timer pa rin ang programa sa network, dagdag pa ni Mr. T, may mga dagdag na magandang provisions gaya ng puwedeng magpasok ng segment ang GMA basta sa ikabubuti ng show.

“Binigyan kami ng GMA ng overtime na 30 minutes sa kontrata. 15 minutes before and after the show. Kasi nga, sa ibang network, may biglaang changes sa programming either sa simula o sa ending kaya may freedom kaming sumabay sa kalaban,” katwiran pa ng Bulaga boss.

Binigyang-diin din ni Mr. Tuviera na nagsisilbi mang public service ang ilang portions ng EB, dahilan ‘yon sa paggi-give back ng programa sa mga taong tumangkilik sa kanila ng maraming taon.

“Parang responsibilidad na namin ngayon ‘yung sana kami naman ang makatulong. Tumulong din kasi sila sa amin kaya hanggang ngayon nandito pa rin kami. Kaya nga panay rin ang pursigi namin upang magbigay ng something new. Naging formula na kasi namin ‘yon all these years!” deklara ni Mr. Tuviera.

Eh, kapag may bagong show na tumatapat sa kanila, ano ang reaksyon nila?

Halos araw-araw na ang taping ni Richard Gutierrez para sa Captain Barbell na magpi-premiere na sa Telebabad block ng GMA 7 sa Marso 21.

Noong isang araw ay lagare si Richard.

Naka-Captain Barbell costume muna siya sa location nila sa may Luneta at nang bandang gabi ay lumipat siya sa Morato Av., Quezon City at naka-Teng-Teng character naman siya.

Mas maraming kinukunang naka-Captain Barbell costume ngayon si Richard dahil more than two months din nilang kinunan muna ang mga eksena na Teng-Teng character ang binata dahil naghintay pa sila sa bagong costume ni Captain Barbell na ginawa sa Hong Kong.

Marami ang gandang-ganda sa bagong costume ni Captain Barbell.

Mas astig daw ang dating no’n.

Naurong sa March 28 ang pilot ng Captain Barbell dahil mas pinagaganda ni Direk Dominic Zapata at ng kanyang staff ang show. Kailangan ding i-adjust ang costume ng aktor dahil pumayat ito.

International ang ilang staff ni Direk Dominic sa paggawa ng Captain Barbell dahil ang costume at production designer na si Peter Collias ay siya ring designer ng The Matrix at Moulin Rouge. Ang costume designer naman ng mga superheroes ay si Emily Lai, a Walt Disney costume designer from Cubedecor of Hong Kong.

Gozon Steers GMA Through The Storm

After a somewhat precarious 2010, Felipe Gozon, CEO of Philippine broadcaster GMA Network, has enjoyed a dream start to 2011. AGB Nielsen viewing figures show that, after years of trailing in second place, GMA eclipsed archrival ABS-CBN in all-day national ratings in January.

“What we have been aspiring for – leading in the nationwide rating – has finally arrived,” Gozon beams, speaking in an interview with Asia Media Journal.

The latest Nielsen figures, up till mid-February, show GMA holding on to a slim lead, though ABS-CBN disputes the claim. ABS-CBN subscribes to an alternate ratings system from Kantar Media, though these figures, while still recognized, are less widely used by media buyers.

GMA also benefits in all-day ratings from the ongoing popularity of early afternoon show Eat Bulaga, produced by third-party production house Tape.

Ratings recovery

Either way, GMA’s audience figures have significantly strengthened following a serious wobble last year, when a potentially perilous dip in ratings called for some quick solutions to get audiences and advertising back on track.

To make matters worse, this slump overlapped with last year’s elections, a critical time for TV networks when additional spend from political campaigns pushes up ad rates. Advertisers diverted more of their budgets to ABS-CBN, some moving wholesale to the rival channel, which struggled with the increased demand.

GMA responded with a swift programming revamp, ditching shows that had little appeal to advertisers, even if they were rating well, and put more focus on fantasy series, a core strength, in response to viewer demand.

“The dip in TV ratings last year woke us up, as we realized that we have become a bit complacent amidst stiffer competition,” Gozon says.

Gozon has also decided to shut down GMA’s underperforming five-year-old lifestyle channel QTV, which had once been seen as a potentially strong flank offering. In a change of strategy, QTV has been replaced by a 24-hour news channel, which made its debut last month.

News can be cheaper to produce than lifestyle content, and may attract a different group of advertisers, though GMA’s new channel will have to go head-to-head with a rival offering launched a week earlier by MediaQuest, the media arm of local telecoms giant PLDT.

MediaQuest has also thrown its weight behind the Philippines’ third most popular channel, TV-5, which has made significant inroads over the past two years on the back of heavy investment from PLDT, taking share from both GMA and ABS-CBN.

Gozon also expects online advertising revenues for GMA’s recently rebranded news website GMA News Online to pick up following the appointment of a specialist online ratings firm, Effective Measure, by a cross industry group of digital publishers.

The broadcaster also recently announced a joint venture between its new media subsidiary and the Manila Jockey Club to develop gaming technology across multiple platforms, as part of a move to develop new revenue streams.

Increasing impatience

Steady improvements seen in the performance of GMA’s main channel meanwhile, resulting in national lead in Nielsen’s ratings, are the result of an ongoing, many-pronged drive that began five years ago, Gozon stresses.

These include: improving signal strength in regions where reception was poor; tweaking programming to suit regional tastes; and, last year in particular, heavily promoting GMA shows in areas where the channel had a low profile.

“Every fiesta, we were there,” Gozon says. “Almost every month our talents were in the malls entertaining local people, talking to the print media, the works. We spent a considerable sum as our last card, because I was really getting very impatient why were not making the kind of dent we wanted to see.”

The biggest brands in the Philippines tend to view the Mega Manila and national markets as equally important though despite building a stronghold in the more affluent Mega Manila area, national leadership had proved elusive to GMA.

GMA also migrated to Hong Kong satellite provider APT Satellite last year, to widen its national satellite footprint. This year, it plans to convert more of its provincial relay stations into originating stations that can produce local programs, with an eye on building up local ad sales revenues, which are relatively small today.

GMA has four originating stations to date, some of which run 30-minute local news shows before the national news as well as early morning variety shows.

Upfront innovation

While GMA worked to recover lost ground in ratings, it also moved to lock in upfront commitments for some of its biggest volume advertisers last November — an unusual move as upfront strategies are usually initiated by advertisers, not the broadcaster. This helped GMA secure 50% of its 2011 ad sales targets by November last year.

“They were very aggressive towards the end of the year trying to seal as many negotiations as they could by offering no rate increase for 2011,” says Venus Navalta, chairman of media agency ZenithOptimedia Philippines. “So for those who went ahead, it’s kind of good for them because GMA is on the uptrend.”
