Solicitor General Cadiz talks about CGMA's electoral sabotage case this Saturday in "The Bottomline with Boy Abunda"

Amid issues of the so-called operation "Put the Little Girl to Sleep" and appeals for Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona to inhibit himself from the cases of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, Solicitor General Joel Cadiz takes the ‘hot seat’ this Saturday (December 3) in “The Bottomline with Boy Abunda” to address issues concerning his office, the Department of Justice and the Aquino government.

The country stands to lose thousands of its locally-produced films for the next generation of Filipinos to appreciate unless an institution will be created to ensure its preservation.

Veteran director Celso Ad Castillo (left) and Abner Mercado (Photo by Christine Chu)

In his documentary for “Krusada” tomorrow (Dec 1), ABS-CBN broadcast journalist Abner Mercado reports that only 3,500 out of the 8,000 Filipino films made since 1919 have been preserved, some of which are in bad condition.

Filipinos today can see the richness of our country’s culture and values by watching classic and contemporary Filipino films. So it is important to preserve these films for the future generations of Filipinos,” he said.

Abner is pushing for the creation of a National Film Archive that will be responsible in preserving Filipino films.

He also talks to some of the country’s biggest names in showbusiness such as the Queen of Philippine cinema Susan Roces, critically-acclaimed director Celso Ad Castillo, box-office hit director Cathy Garcia-Molina, and former child star Niño Muhlach on their thoughts about the issue.

Because it takes more than words to make a stand, watch and be one with Abner’s cause tomorrow (Dec 1) in “Krusada” after “Bandila” on ABS-CBN, or catch it earlier on DZMM TeleRadyo (SkyCable ch. 26), 9:15 PM.

Movie Review : The Adventures of Tintin - The Secret of the Unicorn

The Adventures of Tintin movie is the collaboration of the directive genius of Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson which is based on the two comic books written by Herge entitled The Secret of the Unicorn and Red Rackham’s Treasure.

This is the Synopsis:
Having bought a model ship, the Unicorn, for a pound off a market stall Tintin is initially puzzled that the sinister Mr. Sakharine should be so eager to buy it from him, resorting to murder and kidnapping Tintin - accompanied by his marvellous dog Snowy - to join him and his gang as they sail to Morocco on an old cargo ship.

Sakharine has bribed the crew to revolt against the ship's master, drunken Captain Haddock, but Tintin, Snowy and Haddock escape, arriving in Morocco at the court of a sheikh, who also has a model of the Unicorn. Haddock tells Tintin that over three hundred years earlier his ancestor Sir Francis Haddock was forced to scuttle the original Unicorn when attacked by a piratical forebear of Sakharine but he managed to save his treasure and provide clues to its location in three separate scrolls, all of which were secreted in models of the Unicorn. Tintin and Sakharine.
The Characters

The Adventures of Tintin : The Secret of the Unicorn is such a joy to watch. There are a lot of funny moments in the movie making it more enjoyable. It is thrilling and filled with suspense and humour from the very first scene. And the 3D quality is amazing.Tintin's pet dog Snowy is too adorable with all his expressions.

The main character is Tintin, who is a journalist who we never see doing any journalism though, but that doesn't matter because he is the textbook example of a heroic boy with boy scout qualities. The voice of Jamie Bell fits perfectly for the character. Andy Serkis gives here an incredible performance as Captain Haddock, the drunken sailor who to me was often reminiscent of a grumpy Harrison Ford.

This is the official full trailer

The Movie

The animation is magnificent, the motion capture has gone a long way since The Polar Express. It looks very realistic, especially all the features on Captain Haddock's face. The beard, the wrinkles and the eyes, they all looked amazing. Especially the eyes, they aren't so dead-eyed anymore as in The Polar Express.

The action scenes are brilliantly written and directed, the angles of the camera, the drive of the action scenes, timing of all the jokes(physical or visual) is genius. The computer animation movie is very action-packed. This is understandable because it was the merging of two books and I think this is the reason that it might also feel crammed into a limited time frame. The 3d rendering was very well done and I can attest to this because I’ve done some 3ds myself. It was in fact almost life-like at some scenes. The look of the film is consistent with the comics.  The CGI motion capture is unobtrusive and not too much like a computer game.  The characters look like their comic book ancestors while moving like people.

Overall Spielberg has created an old-fashioned style adventure movie for the whole family to enjoy, where the important things are just the hunt for the treasure, the friendship two people can make and the most important thing of all that it is an entertaining ride. Spielberg never disappoints, it doesn't matter if you are a fan of Tintin or not, you will enjoy this film nonetheless.

The Adventures of Tintin movie is now showing in theaters nationwide, available in 2d, 3d and IMAX theaters. If you like adventure, action and Spielberg's visualization, then Don't miss this.

Anthony Taberna's “Iba-Balita” turns one year

Anthony Taberna win Best Male Newscaster in PMPC Star Awards for TV

Anthony Taberna won as the Best Male Newscaster in the recently held 25th PMPC Star Awards for Television for his primetime newscast “Iba-Balita ni Anthony Taberna,” which recently celebrated its first anniversary, airing weeknights on Studio 23.

Known for his feisty and fearless commentaries on both radio and television, Anthony has made his mark in the industry as he produced some of the biggest stories that rocked the nation.

Anthony, together with his team from ABS-CBN’s investigative program “XXX,” caught former Batangas governor Antonio Leviste with his illegal trips outside his prison cell in the New Bilibid Prison. This scoop not only exposed the alleged special treatment given to Leviste, but also sparked discussions on the efficiency of the government's judicial branch penal system in handling high-profile personalities in jail.

He once again shook the political landscape this year with his exclusive interview with former Maguindanao election supervisor Lintang Bedol, who exposed the alleged fraud committed by former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo during the 2007 elections.

Aside from his political exposes, Anthony also heeds the call for public service when he broke the story about a grandmother detained by her own family in a dog cage. The rescue operations aired on “XXX”, “TV Patrol” and "Ibabalita" spurred the emotions of many Pinoy viewers and was one of the most talked about topics on social networking sites that night.

Anthony, fondly called ‘Tunying’ in the industry, is no longer new at exposing big controversies. In 2005, Anthony scored one of the biggest scoops in history when he reported on the controversial Garci tape.

But with every political scandal he exposes, Anthony’s life is also being exposed to possible danger. Be it through text or online messages, death threats are already part of Anthony’s usual grind at work.

The name Anthony or Tunying has also became a household name for his hard-hitting and no-holds-barred commentaries that radio listeners and TV viewers find informative and entertaining at the same time.

When asked about how he was able to win the hearts of the Filipino audience, Anthony said it’s just about using the language that common people use and discussing serious topics in a funny way.

Anthony’s excellence in the field of journalism truly shines through in his work across all media, and it has opened many doors for him in his broadcasting career that started way back in 1992 when he served as an intern writing news for an AM station.

Three years ago, Anthony was given the chance to enrich his knowledge in the field when he was chosen as the recipient of the Benigno S. Aquino Jr. Fellowship for Professional Development for Journalism by the Embassy of the United States of America.

He indeed came long way as a reporter that started when he joined DZMM in 1997. He was then the youngest Radyo Patrol reporter at that time.

Anthony has come full circle as a reporter after covering Malacañang, Congress, Supreme Court, Defense, police and other important assignments.

He got his first break as a radio anchor in 2000 via the weekend program Ito Ang Radyo Patrol and later, the daily early morning radio show Gising Pilipinas that was also shown on ANC.

Currently, Anthony anchors “Dos Por Dos” on DZMM; morning show “Umagang Kay Ganda,” investigative program “XXX,” and public service program “Ako ang Simula” on ABS-CBN, and primetime newscast “Iba-Balita ni Anthony Taberna” on Studio 23.

Watch Anthony Taberna in “Iba-Balita ni Anthony Taberna,” airing weeknights at 9 PM on Studio 23. To catch up on the past episodes of the show just logon to www.studio23.tv.

GMA Films presents the scariest movie of the year -- “The Road”

Beginning November 30, GMA Films will take movie fanatics to a whole new level of horror where there is no room for clichés and predictable outcomes, but only for a mind-boggling and hair-raising thrill ride via “The Road.”

“The Road” stars Carmina Villarroel, Marvin Agustin, Rhian Ramos, Barbie Forteza, TJ Trinidad, tween stars Alden Richards, Louise delos Reyes, Derrick Monasterio, Lexi Fernandez, Ynna Asistio and Renz Valerio.

Also starring in the film are John Regala, Lloyd Samartino, Gerald Madrid, Allan Paule, Dex Quindoza, Ana Abad Santos and Ms. Jacklyn Jose.

Described by international film critics as “creepy to the extreme” (KillerFilm.com) and a “beautifully shot supernatural tale with incredible effects and great scares” (Bloody Disgusting), The Road is a story about a twelve-year-old cold case, which is reopened when three teenagers go missing while traversing an infamous and abandoned road. As investigators try to find leads to the whereabouts of the missing teens, they also unearth the road’s gruesome past that spans two decades – a history of abduction, crimes and murders. Although the road is isolated, anyone who tries to pass through it can be sure that he is not alone. Lingering in the dark and desolate pathway is a vengeful ghost who makes sure no one leaves the road – alive!

Known for his unorthodox brand of film-making, “The Road” director Yam Laranas (Sigaw/The Echo) promises to treat moviegoers to a fresh new approach to horror.

Apart from its superb cinematography and unique storyline, The Road also boasts of a hauntingly beautiful musical score created by Swedish composer Johan Soderqvist who received international recognitions for his score in the 2009 horror-thriller, Let the Right One In.

Prepare yourselves for the scariest movie of the year – The Road – showing in nationwide theatres beginning November 30.

If you’re not brave enough, be cautioned: DON’T WATCH IT ALONE!

Lakoda Rayne and LeRoy Bell axed out in "The X Factor" Double Eliminations

For the first time on “The X Factor,” a double elimination was held which ended the road for acts Lakoda Rayne and LeRoy Bell. Paula Abdul’s last group standing Lakoda Rayne got automatically booted off the competition after garnering the lowest number of votes.

Nicole Scherzinger’s Over 30s bet LeRoy Bell, on the other hand, was the first act to be eliminated via deadlock, where the judges defer to America’s votes after resulting to a tie with their decisions. Paula and Nicole both voted to send home Marcus Canty while Simon Cowell and L.A. Reid wanted to send home LeRoy.

 LeRoy Bell

 Lakoda Rayne

But by virtue of the deadlock, Leroy was bid goodbye after getting the lowest number of votes next to Lakoda Rayne. Now only seven acts move on to the next round. Simon and L.A.’s acts still remain in the competition; Nicole now only has Josh Krajcik; while all three of Paula’s groups were already sent home. Who will be eliminated next?

Don’t miss “The X Factor” airing via satellite every Thursday and Friday, 7 PM on Studio 23.

Cinema One Originals Festival Awards its most outstanding Filmaker, Actors

More than a glamorous and star-studded event, this year’s Cinema One Originals awards night at the RCBC Theater recently was a celebration of excellence, as it was graced by the most outstanding film producers, directors, writers and actors.

Topbilling the awards night were the Philippines’ hailed Superstar Nora Aunor and critically acclaimed director /writer/actor Mario O’Hara, who both received honorary recognition for pioneering efforts in independent Cinema.

O’Hara has directed classic Filipino movie gems like Ang Bagong Hari, The Fatima Buen Story, Bakit Bughaw ang Langit, “Babae sa Breakwater” and “Ang Paglilitis ni Andres Bonifacio,” “Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos,” “Condemned,” “Bulaklak sa City Jail,” and “Babae sa Bubungang Lata,” while Nora has starred and produced award-winning films such as “Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos,” “Banaue,” “Bona,” and “Condemned.”

In her speech during the awards night, the Superstar shared that years ago, she sold her house just to produce a film, which turned out to be award-winning. “It’s all worth it,” she exclaimed.

O’Hara, on the other hand, left aspiring and young filmmakers with a message: “There’s really nothing wrong in going mainstream, but once you’re there, remain to be independent.”

Since the conception of Cinema One Originals Festival seven years ago, it has created big names and opened opportunities for aspiring actors and filmmakers. This year, some of the actors who have not achieved any milestones yet in mainstream entertainment received the biggest awards of their lives.

Lilia Cuntapay (“Six Degrees of Seperation from Lilia Cuntapay”) and Maricar Reyes (“Anatomiya ng Kurapsiyon”) bagged their first ever Best Actress trophy, while Best Actor Bong Cabrera was teary-eyed during his speech.

Cuntapay’s “mockumentary,” which trails how she reached the peak of her career after years of her portrayals as “aswang,” became a reality in Cinema One Originals awards night. Reyes was not able to attend the event, as she’s still in Canada taping for “Maalaala Mo Kaya.”

“Ka Oryang” bested nine other finalists for the top plum and P200,000 cash prize, as it was hailed as the festival’s Best Picture. Starring Alessandra de Rossi and Joem Bascon, “Ka Oryang” is a glimpse of female political detainees who struggled during the Martial Law.

Sari Lluch Dalena, this year’s Best Director and the woman behind “Ka Oryang,” shared she was inspired by the stories of the friends of her parents, who happened to experience the wrath of martial law and dictatorship in the Philippines.

“To the growing archive of films by women directors, Sari Dalena brings an aesthetically and discursively bold montage of images and texts on the life of tribulation borne by women political prisoners at the height of the Marcos martial law regime. Deploying and juxtaposing names [and by extension, characters such as Oryang, Nanay Rizal, Noli] culled from postcolonial literature, as well as historical events [unarmed demonstrations, a documentary clip showing Marcos and his "women" [Imelda, Imee, Irene—warmly welcomed by Mao Tse Tung], the film intensifies the contradictions it exposes so strongly the viewer sees the need for her to know and to think beyond what is merely cinematographic,” Benilda Santos, member of the jury, said.

Other big awardees were Michael Bonapos (Best Supporting Actor for Sa Ilalim ng Tulay”), Geraldine Villamil (Best Supporting Actress for “Six Degrees of Separation from Lilia Cuntapay”), Antoinette Jadaone (Best Screenplay for “Six Degrees of Separation from Lilia Cuntapay”), Neil Daza and Kiri Dalena (Best Cinematography for “Ka Oryang”), Teresa Barrozo and Ronald de Asis (Best Musical Score for “Ka Oryang” and “Sa Ilalim ng Tulay”), Kaloy Uypuanco (Best Production Design for “My Paranormal Romance”), Ruben Aquino and Leo Valencia (Best Editing for “My Paranormal Romance” and “Six Degrees of Separation from Lilia Cuntapay”).

“Six Degrees of Separation from Lilia Cuntapay” was also given the Audience Choice award. Special Jury Prizes were given to “Mga Anino Sa Tanghaling Tapat” and “Six Degrees of Separation from Lilia Cuntapay” while “My Paranormal Romance” and “Sa Kanto ng Ulap at Lupa” received special mention.

“The first [“Mga Anino Sa Tanghaling Tapat”] is a dark yet sensual and sensitive coming-of-age tale of three young women who must face their family's secret past. This work marks the discovery of a promising new voice in Filipino cinema. The second [“Six Degrees of Separation from Lilia Cuntapay”] is an uproarious and skillful blend of reality and fiction starring a beloved cult actress. It manages to be funny and touching while capturing a certain pop culture zeitgeist,” goes the jury’s statement on the films they awarded Special Jury Prizes.

On the special mention the jury gave to “Sa Kanto ng Ulap at Lupa,” they said: “For their realistic and moving portrayal of four boys who have lost or abandoned their own families in order to live together a life that is as free as it is poor, special mention is made of the ensemble acting of the four boys who played the tragic protagonists of Mes de Guzman’s film—John Paul Escobedo as Yoyong, Jeremie Cercenia as Poklat, Alfredo Ubera, Jr. as Boying, and Zanderson Vicente as Uding.”

For creating “an outstanding debut film that delights and impresses with its imaginative innovation and enrichment of the genre of comedy and its deft orchestration of the different elements of cinema,” director Victor Villanueva of “My Paranormal Romance, on the other hand, was also given special mention.

Catch the screening of "Ka Oryang" (Dec 2, 7:30p.m.); "Six Degrees of Separation from Lilia Cuntapay" (Dec 3, 7:30p.m.); “Sa Kanto ng Ulap at Lupa” (Nov 29, 5p.m.); “Anatomiya ng Korupsiyon” (Nov 29, 7:30p.m.); “Mga Anino Sa Tanghaling Tapat” (Nov 30, 5p.m.); “Di Ingon ’Nato” (Nov 30, 7:30p.m.); “My Paranormal Romance” (Dec 1, 5p.m.); “Big Boy” (Dec 1, 7:30p.m.); “Sa Ilalim ng Tulay” (Dec 2, 5p.m.); and “Cartas de la Soledad” (Dec 3, 7:30p.m.) at the University of the Philippines Theater. The 2011 Cinema One Originals awards night will also be aired on November 27 at 10p.m. on Cinema One, the No. 1 Cable Channel in the Philippines.

Over 100,000 Bulbs Lights Up the Country’s Most Energy Efficient Christmas Tree

As a season that’s overflowing with pyrotechnics, over-the-top lighting, moving displays and decorations, and power-consuming celebrations, Christmas has got to be one of the biggest carbon-emitting holidays of the year. But it’s so easy to get caught up in the spirit of the season that very few start considering its implications on the environment.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that the world needs to cut its carbon emissions. But how exactly can you keep carbon emissions at a minimum without having to sacrifice the festive spirit of the season?

This is what Firefly Electric and Lighting Corporation (FELCO) seeks to do. As part of the holiday festivities, Firefly Lighting lighted up its energy efficient Christmas tree for the fourth year at By the Bay, SM Mall of Asia with the aim to remind the public that celebrating the holidays can be done with greener, more sustainable lighting technologies.

The Most Energy-Efficient Christmas Tree in the Philippines

Dubbed as the most energy efficient Christmas tree in the Philippines, it was illuminated with more than 100,000 Firefly LED bulbs with the total energy consumption equivalent to two small window-type air-conditioners at two horse powers each. Shared Jhie Greenwood, FELCO Marketing Manager, “Firefly’s LED Christmas tree uses the latest lighting technology which is 5 times more energy efficient compared to the regular incandescent bulb."

A Firefly LED light bulb consumes around 24 pesos a month – an amount that’s 7 times less than what’s consumed by an incandescent bulb,” said Jhie. She added that LED can save up to Php150 per bulb a month.

Aside from LED being energy efficient, it is also suitable for “green” building projects because it contains no mercury components and is proven to withstand impact, vibrations and disruptions. Furthermore, Firefly LED has a longer lifetime of 30,000 hours (equivalent to 6.8 years of continuous use) compared to the 1,000 hours of the regular incandescent bulb.

Winter Wonderland: A Tree Lighting Concert

At the Winter Wonderland: A Tree Lighting Concert, guests enjoyed attractions such as the Inflatable Basketball, Balloon Darts, Snow Cones, Snow Blizzard Chamber, and the Snow Photo Booth. A Yuletide concert featuring The CompanY, the country’s renowned vocal ensemble; The Whiplash, one of the most sought after dance groups in Philippine entertainment today; and young theatre artist, Angia Lauren of Trumpets also performed live before the Christmas tree lighting.

By adopting Firefly LED Technology as a solution, FELCO hopes that the Filipino public will be aware that there are greener options available. “Firefly believes that LED is the light source for the future. We believe that using LED products will have a profound impact on energy-saving efforts and become a catalyst in our drive to save our planet for the next generation. With this in mind, we invite everyone to bring their family here at SM Mall of Asia to view this season’s Firefly eco-Christmas tree which will be showcased from today till January,” ended Greenwood.

PCIJ Media killings series Part II - “The Herson Hinolan Case: See no Evil"

The Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism in partnership with GMA News TV airs The Herson Hinolan Case: See No Evil this Saturday night at 9:55 pm on Channel 11.

Herson Hinolan was a hard-hitting radio broadcaster for Bombo Radyo Kalibo. Hinolan’s bombastic and aggressive commentary earned him the ire of many Aklanon politicians. Colleagues remember that Hinolan even engaged in a heated argument with Lezo Mayor Alfredo Arcenio while on the air, to the point where the two challenged each other to a gunfight.

Hinolan was shot on the night of Nov. 13 2004 upon emerging from a town carnival. The gunman and an accomplice fled the scene on board a motorcycle. A few days later, police achieved a major breakthrough when three witnesses came forward to identify the gunman as Mayor Arcenio himself. The three executed affidavits stating that they saw Arcenio walk behind Hinolan and pull the trigger before jumping onto a bodyguard’s motorcycle. With three witnesses in the bag, authorities thought it was “case closed.”

A few months after the murder, however, one witness after another recanted, contradicting their earlier affidavits. Seven years later, the case is still pending before the Cebu Regional Trial Court. In an interview with the PCIJ, Mayor Arcenio says he never attempted to influence any of the witnesses.

Don’t miss The Herson Hinolan Case: SEE NO EVIL, the second instalment of the five-part series of PCIJ Media Killings this Saturday, November 26, 9.55pm after Front Row on GMA News TV.

The case of the deadly Octopus ride; Ted Failon probes safety in amusement parks

It’s Christmas season once again and mini-fair and amusement parks are just around the corner to bring joy and amazement to Filipino families. But how safe are these mini-theme parks nowadays?

In "Failon Ngayon" tomorrow (Nov 26), anchor Ted Failon looks back into a mini-fair accident that happened in 2006, wherein a 14-year old girl died. It was a painful and tragic scene that continues to haunt the girl's dad, Greg Picardal, who saw two his daughters fall from the ‘Octopus’ ride.

Five years have passed since the accident killed Picardal's daughter Kristine and caused his other daughter Kimberly a one-month confinement, but justice remains elusive. According to the president of the National Owner’s Organization of Mini Fairs and Amusement (NOOMA) Leonora Konischi, the government must support them financially so that they can improve the maintenance of their rides and avoid accidents.
